On July 13, 1977, Somalia launched a war of aggression against Ethiopia, known as the Ogaden War, and it was during this war that the F-5E and mig-21 had their fateful encounter.
There were 29 mig-21s and 25 mig-17s in the Somali air force at the time.Ethiopia was in a period of civil strife and had been overwhelmed by Somalia at the start of the war.
When the Ethiopian government finally responded after two weeks of passive attack, it still took weeks to assemble a large force, and the few Ogaden troops that were fighting fought to the death. They had fewer than ten F-5Es, but they were one of the best forces in the rest of the war.
1977年7月13日，索馬里對埃塞俄比亞發動了侵略戰爭，這場戰爭被稱爲歐加登戰爭，正是在這場戰爭中，F-5E和米格-21發生了命運的相遇。
當時索馬里的空軍部隊中，有29架米格-21和25架米格-17。要知道當時的埃塞俄比亞正處於內亂時期，自然是在戰爭一開始就被索馬里打得毫無招架之力。
當埃塞俄比亞政府終於在被動挨打了兩個周之後作出反應時，大部隊集結卻仍需要數週的時間，此時正在奮戰的歐加登少數部隊只能拼死抗敵，他們當時的F-5E不到10架，但卻是在後面的戰爭中表現最好的一支部隊。
