Many believed that the Zumwalt-class destroyers would become the new generation of battleships for the U.S. Navy, but surprisingly, the United States only completed three Zumwalt-class destroyers before announcing the end of construction. First of all, let's be clear: The Zumwalt-class destroyer is actually a product of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. In the context of military competition among countries, many advanced weapons of the super era were born. In particular, the U.S. Navy decided to build a new generation of future warships, called DD21, in order to maintain its superiority over the Soviet Union. At first, the US military planned to arrange the warship to take on the air defense role in the carrier group, for the decisive battle between major powers at sea, can be said to shoulder the heavy responsibility. But who could have predicted that in 1991, the Soviet Union suddenly collapsed and the world changed dramatically, leaving the United States with no rival and the rivalry between the two great powers ceased to exist. As a result, the US has cut back on many military programs, such as B2 bombers, Seawolf-class submarines, construction numbers have been drastically reduced, since there are no more competitors, so they have to save money in this area. Especially for far-sea operations, the US military has no rival and can dominate the world with its existing military power, so the DD21 construction project has been put on hold. But then came the Gulf War, the United States had to go back to DD21. Because in the Gulf War, the Iawa-class battleships returned to the battlefield, the Wisconsin and Missouri, with their 406mm MK7 guns, pounded the Iraqi army with heavy fire. With the help of fire-control radar and pioneer reconnaissance drones, the obsolete giant warship could be given a new lease of life. Inspired by this, the U.S. military decided to change the DD21 to a ground-attack type of warship, the Zumwalt-class destroyer.

它具有非凡的隱身性能，15000噸的排水量，外形充滿了科技感，體型也比一般的驅逐艦大了許多，火力也十分強大。很多人都認爲，“朱姆沃爾特”級驅逐艦的出現會成爲美國海軍的新一代主力戰艦，但令人沒想到的是，美國只建造完了三艘“朱姆沃爾特”級驅逐艦就宣佈停止建造了。這到底是怎麼一回事，“它的實力又如何呢？今天我們就一起來看看這個號稱“全世界最昂貴的大玩具船”——“朱姆沃爾特”級驅逐艦。
首先我們要明確的是，“朱姆沃爾特”級驅逐艦這個大傢伙其實是美蘇冷戰的產物。在各國軍事爭相“競賽”的大環境下，誕生了許多超時代的先進武器。尤其是當時美國海軍，爲了能在與蘇聯之間的較量能保持優勢，決定建造新一代的未來戰艦，項目名稱DD21。起初美軍打算安排這款戰艦在航母編隊中承擔防空任務，用於大國之間的海上決戰，可以說是身擔重任。但誰能料到在1991年，蘇聯突然解體，世界格局發生了巨大的變化，美國一家獨大，再無對手能與之抗衡，這場兩個強國之間的對抗也不復存在了。因此美國方面削減了很多軍事項目，比如B2轟炸機，海狼級潛艇，建造數量都大幅度的削減，畢竟對手都沒了，當讓得在這方面省點錢了。尤其是對於遠海作戰，美軍已經沒有對手，依靠現有的軍事力量，就已經能夠稱霸世界，所以DD21的建設項目就被向後擱置了。不過隨即而來的海灣戰爭，又讓美國不得不重拾DD21計劃。因爲在海灣戰爭中，“依阿華”級戰列艦重回戰場，“威斯康星”號和“密蘇里”號，使用406毫米MK7艦炮，對伊拉克軍隊展開了猛烈的炮火打擊。在火控雷達和先鋒偵察無人機的影響下，這種過時的巨型戰艦還能重獲新生。美軍因此大受啓發，決定將DD21改爲對地攻擊型的戰艦，這就是“朱姆沃爾特”級驅逐艦。
