The Andante with Variations in F minor, Hob. 17/6, also known as Un piccolo divertimento, was composed for piano by Joseph Haydn in 1793 and is one of his most popular piano works.

1793 was also the year that Haydn taught Beethoven. They travelled together from Vienna to Eisenstadt. The young Beethoven made astonishing progress, but Beethoven felt that Haydn did not mean well for him and took on a second teacher. This was probably the reason why Haydn travelled to England alone and found out about it. But this must remain conjecture.

But let's get back to the music: The variations here are a series of double variations, the first theme is in F minor and the second theme is in F major. This is followed by two variations on each theme and an extended coda. The manuscript of the variations is held by the Music Department of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. A facsimile of the manuscript was published by G. Henle Verlag to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Haydn's birth in 2009.
