So I've already done an episode for the other seasons,
namely autumn, winter and spring.
So it was normal to complete this series in the summer
since you liked the other three.
Summer starts on June 21 and ends on September 21,
so it lasts three months like the other seasons.
Just before it was spring,
a transition season between the coldest period, winter,
and the hottest period, summer.
Indeed, France is in the northern hemisphere of our planet
and it is the period of the year when this part of the globe
is the most exposed to the sun.
So it is during this period that it will receive the most rays of sun,
which will have the effect of greatly increasing temperatures.
Even if it is already starting to get a little hot in the spring
and that this heat can even last until early October,
it depends on the years and regions in France.
Regarding temperatures, they also vary depending on where you are in France,
but we can roughly say that it is at least 25 degrees during the day
and more than 15 at night.
In any case, unlike spring,
it is colder in the morning and there is no more frost.
And if we have more exposure to the sun,
we will therefore have a longer sunset period,
which means that summer is the season where the duration of the day is the longest
and, on the contrary, where the nights are the shortest.
In summer, the sun rises very early,
usually around 6 am,
and it goes to bed late,
mostly after 9.30 pm,
so the day lasts about 15 hours,
and the French love that.
It is also because we have advanced by an hour in April
that the sun goes to bed later.
Indeed, the light of day does good to our body and our mind,
so the more light there is,
the happier people are and feel in good health.
In winter, people are depressed because it is darker and colder
and they fall ill more often,
since they stay more frequently in their homes.
So this summer season is perfect to do as many outdoor activities as possible
in order to enjoy the sun and the light
and thus avoid being locked in the house.
In July and August, it is the big holidays,
that is to say that at the beginning of July,
it is the end of the school year for all students.
So there will be no more school during these two months,
and that's why children are crazy about this season.
This makes summer the most touristy season,
the hot season,
where many French people will be on vacation.
Many workers take two or three weeks off in a row
to be able to go somewhere,
or just to rest.
Moreover, there are many companies that close during the last three weeks of August,
and in general, the French administration takes a break in the summer
or turns to the slow.
And the favorite holiday destination of the French is the sea.
They love going to the sea.
The beaches and swimming pools will be packed,
since the favorite leisure in this season are aquatic activities.
We go to the beach to swim or to swim,
to go on a boat, to go jet skiing, to go surfing,
to go to an aquatic park, etc.
We love being in the water,
to be able to cool down with its strong heat.
In July and August,
there are a lot of people in all the French seaside resorts,
especially on the Côte d'Azur, in Corsica,
but also on the entire Atlantic coast.
The Arcachon Basin, where I come from,
is one of the most popular destinations on this western coast of the country.
Couples who have no children prefer to leave in June or September
to avoid the months of July and August, which are dark.
But the French do not only go to France.
They also love to go abroad for their holidays,
like in Spain, on the Costa Brava,
in Portugal, in Italy or in Greece,
but also internationally, outside of Europe.
Something you may have noticed,
but people love to tan,
whether on their beach towels
or in their garden on a long chair in the summer,
the French take advantage of all the opportunities to tan.
It's an expression for tanning.
And yes, in some hot countries,
we avoid the sun as much as possible,
but not in France,
even if the summer sun is dangerous,
since it is at its maximum power.
So even if we see sunscreens everywhere,
people don't protect themselves enough
and catch sunburns,
which are this famous skin burn
when you expose it too much to the sun.
So you will see the majority of people stay in the sun like lizards
and become all red.
And a few weeks before the start of the season,
many start doing sports and diets
to have an aesthetic body
and proudly put on swimsuits.
You know, the famous summer body.
The summer body, as the French say.
The second favorite holiday destination
is the mountains.
In the mountains, it's a little less hot than in the plains,
so summer is the perfect opportunity
to go out there
and do hiking, climbing, cycling
or just camping.
The ski season is over
since there is no more snow in the summer.
Another choice for these holidays
and to avoid the crowd
is to go to the verts.
To go to the verts is an expression
to say that we take holidays in the countryside,
where the landscape is open.
The French like to go there to enjoy nature
and its tranquility.
The advantage is that these holidays
are generally cheaper than at sea.
And in France, there are many places
where to go to enjoy the countryside.
You can do a lot of cultural visits,
like castles, vineyards, caves,
small villages, farms, etc.
For us, summer symbolizes the open air,
freedom, that is to say,
spending as much time as possible
outside your home,
in the water, under the sun, in nature.
But we absolutely want to enjoy
this period, which is synonymous
with relaxation for us.
It's the aperitif period,
aperitifs at one or the other.
A lot of people invite each other
for a barbecue, a barbeque, as they say.
Meals are festive
and we like to watch until very late at night
to be gathered all together.
The French are also fans of picnics.
We take a glacier full of food,
we spread a tablecloth on the grass
and we eat sitting on the floor,
in the shade of a tree or a parasol,
whether in a couple,
in a family or among friends.
In supermarkets, at the entrance,
where there are promotions and articles
in fashion at the moment,
we can see garden tables,
long chairs, inflatable pools,
barbecues, fans,
air conditioners, rosé wine,
beers, aperitif biscuits.
In short, everything that symbolizes summer.
It is also a season conducive to festivals
and there is a lot to do in France.
These are mostly music festivals
and there are some everywhere in the territory,
especially in the south where there is the most sun,
but also in Brittany,
known to be a very festive region.
One of the most famous festivals is in Brittany,
it's called Les Vieilles Charrues.
I can also mention the Hellfest
for metal music fans,
the Festival Solidays,
which is engaged in the fight against AIDS,
the Francofolies of La Rochelle, etc.
We also organize parties,
like the famous Bayonne parties,
which celebrate Basque traditions,
with thousands of people dressed in red and white,
singing, dancing,
and drinking in the streets.
In the episode on spring,
I said that this season,
nature was back to zero,
the trees and plants were restarting
their life cycle at the beginning of spring,
after the cold of winter,
but once in summer,
nature is at its peak,
the green is everywhere,
in other words,
the leaves and flowers have already grown
for a good part of the species.
This world of the living
will give us many seasonal fruits,
very sweet,
which we were looking forward to with impatience,
like strawberries, raspberries, apricots,
melons, cherries, peaches, etc.
It's also the return of the mosquitoes,
which we were looking forward to see again.
Summer is the sweetness
and the joy of living for a large majority of us,
we allow ourselves two months
of complete break,
to better leave on the return in September.
Holidays,
the beautiful weather, the party,
it is for these reasons that the French,
small and large,
consider that it is their favorite season.
I stop here for today,
