The Queen's Daughter in the Flame Castle
by Josef Haltrich
Once upon a time there was a poor man.
He had so many children as if they were holes in a sieve.
And he had all the people in his village as his father.
When he had another son,
he sat down on the country road to ask the first best to be his father.
There came an old man in a gray coat down the road.
He asked him. And he took the request willingly,
went with him and helped the boy to be baptized.
But the old man gave the poor man a cow with a calf.
That was on the same day on which the boy was born,
came into the world and had a golden star in front of his forehead
and should belong to the little one.
When the boy was bigger, he went with his cattle,
that had now become a big bull,
every day to the pasture.
But the bull could speak.
And when they had arrived on the mountain,
he said to the boy,
Stay here and sleep,
because I want to look for my pasture.
As the boy slept, the bull ran away like lightning
and came to the big pasture and ate golden star flowers here.
When the sun went down, he hurried back and woke up the boy.
And then they went home.
So it happened every day until the boy was twenty years old.
Then the bull said to him one day,
Now sit between my horns and I carry you to the king.
Then ask him for a seven-edged long iron sword
and say you want to redeem his daughter.
Soon they were at the king's castle.
The boy got off and went to the king and said why he had come.
He gladly gave the sword to the shepherd boy.
But he had no great hope of seeing his daughter again,
because already many cowardly young men had dared to set her free in vain.
For a twelve-headed dragon had kidnapped her,
and it lived far away, where no one could reach.
For first, on the way there was a high, impassable mountain,
second, a wide and stormy sea,
and third, the dragon lived in a flaming castle.
If someone had succeeded in coming over the mountain and the sea,
he would not have been able to penetrate through the mighty flames.
And if he had managed to get through,
the dragon would have killed him.
When the boy had the sword, he sat between the horns of the bull,
and in no time they were in front of the great mountain valley.
We can turn back there, he said to the bull,
because he thought it impossible to get over.
But the bull said,
wait just a moment,
and put the boy to the ground.
As soon as that had happened, he took a run,
and pushed with his mighty horns the whole mountain to the side,
so that they could move on.
Now the bull put the boy back between the horns,
and soon they had reached the sea.
Now we can turn back, said the boy,
because no one can get over there.
Wait just a moment, said the bull,
and hold on to my horns.
Then he bowed his head to the water,
and swam and swam up the whole sea,
so that they moved on on dry feet on a meadow.
Now they were soon at the flame castle,
but there came such a glow from afar,
that the boy could no longer stand it.
Hold on, he called to the bull.
No further, otherwise we must burn.
But the bull ran very close,
and suddenly poured the sea he had drunk into the flames,
so that they extinguished immediately,
and caused a mighty smoke,
from which the whole sky was covered with clouds.
But now the dreadful steam
brought forth the twelve-headed dragon full of rage.
Now it's your turn, said the bull to the boy.
Beware that you strike all the heads of the monster at once.
He took all his strength together,
grasped the mighty sword in both hands,
and dealt such a swift blow to the monster,
that all the heads flew down.
But now the beast was writhing on the earth,
that it trembled.
But the bull took the dragon's body on his horns,
and hurled it after the clouds,
so that no more trace of him could be seen.
Then he said to the boy,
My duty is now over. Go now to the castle.
There you will find the princess,
and lead her home to her father.
So he ran away to the meadow,
and the boy did not see him again.
But the boy found the princess inside,
and she was very happy that she had been freed from the ferocious dragon.
They went now to their father,
held a wedding,
and it was great joy in the whole kingdom.
