The Elephant Sunplaster is probably the most famous experiment in the world.
Hydrogen peroxide is mixed with another liquid and in seconds it forms such a foam ball boy.
The color of the foam ball can be influenced by food color.
Today I will dare to expand this experiment classic that has not changed for decades.
I want the foam ball to shine in the dark.
Let's go! 3, 2, 1 ...
And of course that it is big, but back to the beginning.
When I reached 100,000 subscribers in the summer, I had an idea.
I want to make a special video, a special, consisting of an experiment classic.
But in particular, since I was dealing with luminous materials as part of my final work, it was relatively clear that it would be a foam ball.
And it should shine in the dark, because something like that has not yet existed.
For the classic elephant sunplaster experiment, you need hydrogen peroxide.
In my case, the hydrogen peroxide with 35% is already decently highly concentrated.
That and detergents. Without detergents, no foam. And a catalyst, in this case potassium iodide.
A foam ball can be generated by this, but normally it does not shine.
And for that I went looking for suitable luminous materials.
My first idea was sodium fluorescein.
I have already made videos with sodium fluorescein in the past.
An incredibly good luminous material, which used to color a whole river, the Chicago River, green for St. Patrick's Day.
Sodium fluorescein, however, is an organic luminous material,
so the harsh reaction conditions during the elephant sunplaster experiment lead to it no longer being able to shine.
So it had to be something else.
I went looking for other options.
The search led me to a set with five different luminous materials, which should shine for hours in their respective color.
The manufacturer's used examples are light storage for camping trips
and mixing with transparent carrier materials such as glue, varnish or epoxy resin.
The pictures in the reviews were also chic.
The ideas with the green Dino shining, shining fingernails and blue shining chess board looked promising.
But the big question remained.
How does such a luminous material behave in my elephant sunplaster?
I ordered the set and one day later it was already with me.
It followed a story on my Instagram account.
These five powders could shine very well.
So I was in good spirits.
I prepared another test run and was looking forward to the result.
At the same time, I researched for other luminous materials,
this time far from Amazon, directly from the manufacturer of these five luminous materials, LUMENTIX.
Here I would like to give you a brief overview of the products,
because the world of luminous substances is quite creative.
In addition to the luminous powder set, there are also luminous powders,
which are already colorful in bright light and then shine in color in the dark.
This is quite interesting for me,
because with it I could already color the elephant sunplaster foam in daylight,
without using food coloring, and let it shine in color at night.
But back to the text.
In addition to the purposes of night lighting, there are so-called light storages,
which are a mixture of super absorber and luminous material.
Filled in a glass bottle and charged during the day,
it serves as a night light, completely without electricity.
Something exciting comes out of it,
when two fathers with expertise work together in their own field
and work on a product.
The luminous pigments are user-friendly,
because they are very easy to use.
The luminous colors in different variations also look interesting.
I myself was able to test the variant blue-green.
Back to my test run.
Unfortunately, the luminous material was not suitable.
For my XXL experiment, I need something else.
A telephone call with Dr. Falco Böttger-Hiller,
the chemist and development manager of LUMENTIX, brought fruits,
and two days later it rang at my door.
Now the luminous material has arrived for the third test run.
This is what it looks like now, shining with light.
So real madness, this is what the pure luminous material looks like.
Okay, let's go.
And it works.
It just works.
The test run was successful.
The luminous material does not disintegrate
and has an incredibly high luminosity.
Next, I had to buy a black light filter,
so that a much larger foam ball can be used to illuminate
than in my small test runs.
But how big would the foam ball be?
10 liters volume, 100 liters or several thousand liters?
To estimate that, you have to look at the reaction.
Hydrogen peroxide disintegrates in the presence of potassium iodide
very quickly into water and oxygen gas.
The oxygen softens and produces foam in combination with the detergent.
According to the calculations, the foam ball at 250 ml of 35% hydrogen peroxide
should be just under 32 liters.
It is practical that this box here has a volume of exactly 32 liters.
With this I can test whether I am right with the calculation.
The solution already contains the luminous material,
which even in normal light already has a strong color.
That's why the chic pink color.
The foam ball is much larger than 32 liters.
I would easily estimate it to be three times the size, i.e. about 100 liters.
But why is that?
In my calculation, it is not yet taken into account
that a lot of energy is released by the reaction,
which heats a part of the water so much that it evaporates.
You have to keep in mind the following.
A tiny amount of just 1 ml of water
becomes 1.67 liters of water vapor.
This increases the foam ball immensely.
Calculated at 10 liters of hydrogen peroxide,
my foam ball, if I take into account the resulting water vapor,
now reaches a size of over 8,000 liters.
So it can finally go to the preparation of the main experiment.
In a 2 liter cup, 1 liter of hydrogen peroxide
is mixed with the luminous material of LUMENTIX
and 700 milliliters of detergent.
Then the catalyst solutions are prepared.
For this I need two cups with 500 milliliters of water each,
in which 125 grams of potassium iodide are dissolved per vessel.
A little stirring and the solutions are ready.
Last but not least, 9 liters of hydrogen peroxide have to go into my reaction container.
Hydrogen peroxide with a concentration of 35% is a dangerous substance.
It bleaches textiles and causes severe irritation on the skin
and severe damage to the eyes.
Therefore, gloves that protect against splashes
and protective glasses are absolutely necessary.
Otherwise, hydrogen peroxide is a useful chemical.
Finally, I spread out a plan,
put the UV lights in position
and set up several cameras while it was getting dark
until the night finally broke in.
The experiment can begin.
Okay, now we're finally starting.
Now this luminous mixture comes here
together with the soap
into the remaining 9 liters of hydrogen peroxide in here.
That's already 1 liter of hydrogen peroxide.
Then we come to a total of 10.
Once away with the lid.
You can already see it shining through the UV light.
Oh, that looks nice.
Shake it a little bit right away.
What does it look like? Really nice.
Protective clothing is really necessary here.
Now I'll get the potassium iodide and then we'll get started.
Well, 100,000 subscriber special JJ Chemistry
here on YouTube.
Luminous toothpaste with 10 liters of hydrogen peroxide, 35%.
Let's go. 3, 2, 1.
100,000 subscribers here on YouTube.
Now even more than 100,000 subscribers for a long time.
Again, thank you very, very much.
I hope you enjoyed the fact that I was able to renew this experiment
classic for an innovative idea
for decades or probably the experiment has been carried out for 100 years.
I think that hasn't happened at all in the last few years.
And we did it together
in the form of my 100,000 subscriber special.
With this I announce a move to a larger laboratory.
From December on, I have a large commercial area for myself
in which I can set up an office and laboratory.
From now on, channel memberships are also available.
If you want to continue to support me
and want to see even more, even better videos,
you are welcome to do so in the form of a channel membership.
Last but not least, I would like to thank the sponsor of the video, LUMENTIX,
which with numerous shining articles
leads an exciting product range for everyone.
Feel free to stop by the shop.
The links to the channel membership and LUMENTIX are in the video description.
And with that I look forward to seeing you again in the next video.
