Donnie Yen's daughter Jasmine Yen and Simu Liu have actually both dropped an original music video on YouTube recently
I personally think they're both pretty good songs, but the internet has a lot to say
Yeah, there was a lot of comments on the next shark about these songs
But I think it's only fair that we run clips from Jasmine Yen's IDK and Simu Liu's don't
Your eyes fixed on the floorboards I came this close to walking over
Damn, I wish I told you
Honestly, I like them both man
We couldn't play that much of the song, but I would say click the link down below check them out. They're all over Spotify
I'm not getting paid to promote their songs. By the way, I genuinely like them
Yeah, make sure you like subscribe turning your notifications Andrew silly to serious always breaking it down
I'm gonna go ahead and say that
Superstars kids or movie superstars releasing pop singles is more in the silly category
But a lot of people Andrew they got serious feelings about silly things, right? Yeah, I guess apparently
Anyways guys, we'll get in the comment section about Jasmine Yen first and then we'll move on to Simu Liu
Somebody said this song is a bop. It's a nice tune. Not bad at all. She sounds really good
Somebody said man
She just might need to work on her stage presence in terms of like dancing in the music videos and somebody else said man
I don't know. There's a lot of auto-tune and AI maybe Melodyne is what they're referring to
But overall, I think everybody can say Andrew especially for Mandarin music, which is not as good
I'm gonna keep it real as Korean music and even outside of ballads Japanese music
This is pretty good hip-hop R&B pop for like bilingual English Mandarin music. Yeah, I thought she made it sound cool
What do you what do you compare it to? I would compare it to almost like
Some kpop from maybe five six years ago
I mean you can still see this style, but I want to say it's a little bit of an older 2010 style R&B
But in American sense, I would compare it to like Tinashe. Okay. Yeah, Tinashe is not hard. No, it's definitely got some flavor
I thought her performance in the song is really good. She goes in and out
She kind of I don't know all the technical terms of singing. Okay, but I just know she goes
And I thought she had some soul in her voice, too
Yeah, it was really convincing. Um, she goes to the Berklee College of Music, which is in Boston, Massachusetts
That is the top music college in America
But there was some interesting debate that got sparked in the comment section. Somebody said, uh, okay
Sounds like I should care who the F is Donnie Yen and someone says what at the who the F is Donnie Yen comments
Somebody said I don't even know what the Berklee College of Music is. I only knew about UC Berklee
So a lot of people were basically debating Andrew
What should people know and what should people not know because you know
Anytime you get a bunch of Asians of different Asian background like a pan-asian site like next chart people can disagree over like oh
You don't know that celebrity cuz you don't value my culture some of the group people were
Accusing Koreans of only caring about Korean artists and not knowing any of the famous Chinese people. Mmm. Yeah
All right. So here's the thing Donnie Yen is a martial artist. Obviously, he's pretty well-known
He's top three and go Jackie Chan Jet Li and Donnie Yen as far as
He's probably a far number three to be fair. Yeah, but but he's still pretty famous
But yeah, I don't know if pitching it to all Asians like oh, this is Donnie Yen's daughter
You want to check out her music if you're gonna be like a martial artist daughter?
I guess you know JC Chan, which is a Jackie Chan son used to do music a little bit, too
Yeah, but I think is it different because Donnie Yen actually grew up in America. Donnie Yen grew up in Boston
Yeah, I mean at the end of the day, you don't really have to care who Donnie Yen is
That's fine. If you don't care about Jasmine Yen either. I mean, whatever but
Good song. I was impressed. I mean, you know, we ended were Cantonese. It's different because Donnie Yen he holds a higher position
I'm not gonna our sub
Silo of the Asian world. Oh, let's be honest with having roots from Hong Kong. Donnie Yen is from Hong Kong
Love it. But how come he ain't sing the song? She ain't do the song in Cantonese then what's going on here?
Of course, we know what's going on Henry
Anyway, Nepo bow bow somebody called their Nepo bow bow and somebody said dead not the Nepo bow bay
She's only famous because of her dad. My heart is full when I'm introduced to another Nepo, baby
I'll only care if she can throw a punch. That's pretty funny. I hope that she actually just for her career
I think that she should
Use some of her martial arts background if she has any obviously her dad's like incredible at it
But I would say we getting to the point now where there's so many rich old famous Asian Americans and that even their kids are
starting to be the
You know the Kendall Jenner's or whatever like well, you know Donnie and I wouldn't really call my Asian American
But his daughter is definitely like a third culture kid like an international school kid, right?
She's blending English and Chinese like very fluidly
Going in between the two so I would say like yeah, is it some nepotism? Of course, bro
Of course, there's a little bit of nepotism because she's got the money to make this song
But do you think Asian Americans where a lot of us come from more of a struggle background?
Hard times or moderate background or lower?
What do we think when we see these people whose parents have let's just say 50 100 million dollars a billion dollars
Trying to enter our consciousness. I mean, there's there's Asian artists right now who come from rich parents, but nobody knocks him for it
like a bunch of
Parents can own a bunch of like coal mines and they're super rich, too
I don't know
But I guess is that different than being having a foot in the industry, of course because Donnie ends more famous
But all the kids from like ADA rising like half of them come from really well-off families to be honest
I'm not saying that's the reason why they get to be artists. They still have to be talented, but it doesn't hurt
Oh, it's a huge like turbo boost off the rip
It helps your career Swift comes over my hedge fund from family that helped her career, but it's Taylor Swift a great artist
Yeah, everybody respects. It's interesting point. Somebody says another useless entertainer
Why can't they become doctors scientists or actual artists and other people said bro? We have a ton of those in the Asian world
Nowadays, why are you being a super old-school?
Confucian what's wrong with people being entertainers and somebody said as if at least one person experiences happiness due to this person's entertainment
It is not a useless position, bro
She's the daughter of an entertainer. Why wouldn't she think about being an entertainer?
Like why would she be like a radiologist in fact David
I don't know of any children of famous entertainers who went off deep into the stem field
I'm sure there are I can't think of any right because more naturally
I mean a lot of people whose parents are doctors or stem they go into stem because it's that's what you're surrounded around
That's what you're exposed to and that's what you grow up around, right?
I mean nowadays Andrew I would say a lot of the best NBA prospects their dads play pro basketball
If not in the NBA exactly, um, somebody said I thought Kane's daughter played the violin what she's doing R&B
Nah, John Wick shot at the John Wick for that movie was fired. Um, of course, there was some criticism Andrew yikes
This ain't 2014 musically poor thing gonna be forgotten in a month. Yeah, so here I'll wrap it up here about Jasmine
Yeah
I think that if she can continue to make music at this level
Which I know that there was a lot put into this music and music video
Even though she is one of the writers of it at the end of the day, man
If she can't make music at this level continually, you're right
Her career probably is gonna be short, but this is a hit like this a good song
I do think I
Understand where the comments coming from where the music sounds maybe six seven eight years old if we're following American or kpop trends
However, if you understand in my opinion, I'm not sure Andrew if you understand the Japan music scene
They very much freeze that late 90s early 2000s sound crystal K
So it could be more of a evergreen
Japanese interpretation of early 2000s R&B versus like saying
Oh, it's trying to be ultra on trend because it was trying to be ultra on trend. You'd have to be super EDM dance
Right, right, right. Maybe she will put out a dance track and the truth is what are the expectations with jasmine yen?
She don't got to make it like her father if she just has a career
touring Singapore
Malaysia like a little bit English-speaking Southeast
Maybe a couple shows in LA and Vegas where there's like a large population of Chinese people
I don't know almost like a RIP like a Coco Lee type East West vibe. Yeah. Yeah East West vibe
I will say about the video the video was a little bit generic of her just dancing with her friends
I think they could have incorporated a young Chinese influencer guy and have her him play
I think the video look very Japanese because it was sponsored by Sony as well
Do you think it's true that it would have gone more viral if there was a kung-fu theme or any sort of like
Wing Chun
Anything to have made it look different, but ultimately the song is pretty good
Um, David moving on moving on to my favorite song of the two, right?
You're your area of expertise 20 something's in a crowded room
Yeah, I like the song
Simu Liu song don't now. I heard the audio like a month ago or two ago, right?
And there are two months ago and then the video came out and yeah
Let's just go through some of the positive comments
And then of course, we will head into the critical comments as well
Simu sounds like John legend that is a hell of a compliment
Honestly, I didn't fully see that and then once I've read this common comment, I saw it later
Somebody says Simu. Please spare some talents for the rest of us. Obviously showing that you know, he is a very multi-talented person
Stop because I didn't need more reasons to love him. I really like it and then yeah, basically people were saying it sounds good
I think objectively the song is good
Like this was song when it came out it was better than I thought it was gonna be
I'm gonna go into it once you hear the critical comments
But I think that had you just heard this song from anybody like you didn't tell him it was from Simu and you didn't see
The music video. I think anybody is being like, oh this song is cool
Like yeah, you know like it's maybe not my type of music, but like I like it
You know, that's essentially what I think most people would say. Yeah. Now, let's get into some more critical comments
Somebody said this feels like a parody. Why would he do this? Please stick to acting somebody said damn it wasn't that bad
Obviously even that comment saying damn it wasn't that bad is I guess probably a moderate negative, right?
All right. It's a kind of a backhanded compliment. I guess what do you think it is?
I mean
I would say just from the music video sense when they're saying it sounds like a parody the only reason
Where I could kind of see where this comments coming from is in the music video
It starts off white and black with a gimbal pushing
That's how SNL starts a lot of their parody music videos because SNL obviously later in the past
I want to say five years has been doing a lot of like high-end music video. Yeah
Well, it looked like music videos. No, I think the thing is part of it is that this music video is pretty simplistic
It's just Simu and a piano personally. I would have liked to see a little bit more in the music video
I think you could have incorporated some kids to tell the story about some kid at like prom
Industry mixers, yeah a girl or a guy like two characters in the music video and told that story
I'm sure that's a lot more trouble and that cost more
I'm sure they were trying to get this video done in one day. I would say in my opinion
I was thinking about it. Some of the criticism made more stem from even um
And I don't know if it's a similar to the jasmine yen thing where the music you didn't expect him to make that genre music
Right, right. It's a little older John legends in his 40s
Yeah, it may sound like something that I would maybe think was a from artist in their 40 plus possibly and I will say this
It's a very serious song, but I think lyrically it's pretty strong
But it is quite serious maybe for Simu's image
So then people are kind of like thrown off by that
But I think if Chris Evans Chris Pratt Bradley Cooper Ryan Reynolds Jason Momoa even or Cillian Murphy from Oppenheimer
Dropped this song. I don't think as many people would be hating on it
But what if he would have been in that Keshi Lane though?
What if it was in the sad boy that you know what I mean?
What everybody is adding all the Asians that are 20 are into I think Simu should try that song
But someone said anyone else start out as a fan, but now is just totally sick of him being the API poster child
Can we please see another name and face?
Yeah, I mean there are other names and faces though
Yeah
I mean
I think it's we've done made videos about this before when you're the first and the only one rep in not everybody's gonna like
Agree with you giving that spot
But it's not that you like kicked everybody else off the podium. You know like the two and the three
It's just that our world is so underdeveloped and in its infancy as much as we hate to admit that harsh reality
There is no two and three on the podium right right right you don't mean the art like deus doesn't have a two and three
It's just one guy
But it's not like you can get a lot like worse you could do a lot worse than Simu
Honestly I know a lot of people in entertainment
Oh my gosh, even the fact that Simu is still also credited as one of the songwriters
You know I and I just think like overall maybe it was a little unexpected. Maybe the song's a little serious
Maybe the genre is maybe a little bit more. I don't want to say country, but like
Yeah, I guess 40 year old American than people thought but the song in a vacuum
It's nice. Yeah, somebody said do not put Simu Liu amongst Andy Lau as actors who have dabbled in singing
Andy Lau is considered one of the four heavenly kings of canto pop
No, I know
I think the way the written art wrote the article the way the article was written
I wouldn't even have put Andy Lau in the article with him to be honest, but hey listen
Simu he's saying the country version of 50 cent in the club on Jimmy Fallon. He's he's out there singing
I'm not saying that Andy Lau don't got some classics
I'm just saying some of those peacock outfits that he wore at the Hong Kong performances. What is he doing all right?
Somebody just said yo man can sing to team Simu all day, and then we actually got quoted in it. Uh
this
This song got feeling man been on repeat today, and we got quoted in the next article
It's facts like I'm not capping at all. You know just so you know I'm not capping
Saw you there in the corner
Your eyes fixed on the floor buzz. I came this close to walking over
Damn I wish I told you
No, this part hits this part hit
Way down the road all right anyways anyway. Let's get into our takeaways Andrew
I mean, I think it's always fun to talk about these things like we said one of them is the daughter of Donnie Yen
She's got the hip-hop R&B single to me my final commentary on it. It's like it just feels
So like what people should have been making in Chinese class like I wish all Asian Americans
and I'm not saying we all have the finances or the famous dad or the
Summers and the East and winters in the West like she did growing up
But it just felt like such a good balance of being American in Chinese obviously more on the American side
That you just don't see from ABC's you know and like you said maybe it's because she's the daughter of a superstar
Being raised as a third culture kid in HK or whatever, but like I I just like was like man
I wish it was like proud of being Chinese
I felt that in the song, but I felt like I have a very deep understanding of the West too
You know so I like that too. I agree that sometimes though. It does require
These international kids who actually see move doesn't count like he didn't go to international school, but he is from China right well
Not really nice from Canada where they have a more easy
I feel like it's more acceptable to like listen to Chinese music at school
Yeah, exactly so I think like the confidence that they're bringing is gonna rub off on Asian Americans
I think Asian Americans should not shy away from this obviously
I think anybody hating on these people actually cannot make a better song
I actually don't think so I think actual singers and people who have tried to make music
Which we have in our past maybe not seriously
But we have made a lot of songs like I understand what it takes to make a song and a music video even this good
Yeah, it's hard. It's hard. There's a lot
They have the actual talent and now maybe you're like oh you see Simu's face a lot
Okay, cuz Barbie just came out and because you follow next shark and next shark will post stuff about Simu
Then you feel like they're like oh, he's got the weekend. He's not Shawn Mendes. Yeah. Yeah, anyways, that's
Guys actually listen to the whole song. I think anybody can say that both the songs are pretty solid
Yeah, you guys know what you guys think in the comment section below man. I'm a fan of both of them
Both way better than I thought and better than I can do baby don't
Not forget to hit the like
Anyway, let us know what you think in the comment section. Keep it civil until next time we out. Peace
