In Macbeth, act 1 scene 5 shakespeare writes:
LADY MACBETH
O, never
Shall sun that morrow see!
Your face, my thane, is as a book where men
May read strange matters. To beguile the time,
Look like the time. Bear welcome in your eye,
Your hand, your tongue. Look like th’ innocent
flower,
But be the serpent under ’t.
What do you mean shakespeare?
John florio in 1591 writes:
remember, that serpents hidden he, where gras & flowers are hiel
Florio wants to underline that the most dangerous things are often hidden behind innocent and beautiful
things.
This is also what shakespeare writes:
Lady Macbeth is advising on how to go about killing King Duncan. She encourages him to appear innocent
and play the welcoming host to the king so that no one will suspect his true intention: murder.
