When he worked at the french embassy John Florio had the role to bring the letters that the French ambassador Castelnau wrote to English aristocracy. In this way Florio was able to get to know men like Walter Raleigh, Philip Sidney, and London greatest spymaster: Francis Walsingham.
Francis Walsingham was principal secretary to Queen Elizabeth I and he employed John Florio for one of the most intriguing spy story of early modern era: the Babington Plot.

SOLUTION: In Hamlet, Shakespeare writes a detailed reference to the Babington plot: and specifically to the whole process of the letters copied and sealed in the same way Walsingham’s spies worked. The main protagonist, in fact, forges a substitute letter and seals it , his guardians never suspecting the ruse . This was Walsingham's procedure in the Babington conspiracy. The letters, after being read, were resealed and passed on to the unsuspecting Mary.
