Welcome back to another episode of the Historian's Den.
Before we begin, are you familiar with the story of a man who went from obscurity to
become the leader of the largest contiguous empire ever created? What kind of person could
unite warring clans and establish a military force that could conquer vast territories stretching
from China to Europe? What inspires someone to become a conqueror, statesman and visionary?
We're talking about the conqueror of Eurasia, Genghis Khan.
Let's find out some of the lesser-known facts about this legend.
Number 1. He was not originally named Genghis Khan. His birth name was Temüjin, and he only
received the title of Genghis Khan, which means universal ruler, after he united the Mongol
tribes and became the leader of the Mongol Empire. Number 2. Genghis Khan was known for his religious
tolerance. Despite being a follower of Tengriism, he allowed freedom of religion within his empire
and even employed people of different faiths in his administration. Number 3. He was a skilled
military strategist and innovator. Genghis Khan developed new tactics and weapons, such as the
composite bow and the use of cavalry in battle, that helped him conquer much of Eurasia. Number
4. Genghis Khan was also a successful diplomat. He used diplomacy and marriage alliances to
establish friendly relations with neighboring kingdoms and empires. Number 5. He had a strong
sense of justice. Genghis Khan created a legal code, the Yasa, which codified laws and punishments
for crimes. He also punished corrupt officials and encouraged his soldiers to treat civilians
with respect. Number 6. Genghis Khan was said to have over 500 wives and concubines,
but he was also a devoted husband and father. He was known to be loyal to his first wife,
Borte, and he had a close relationship with his children. At last, he died in 1227,
possibly from injuries sustained in battle or from falling off his horse. His burial site is
unknown, but it is believed that his body was buried secretly in order to prevent it from being
desecrated. What other facts do you know about this great ruler? Write down in the comment section.
