Yeah, Musk definitely has a lot on his mind after Starship's latest test flight.
His rocket company's attempt to send its Starship system into space on Thursday ended in a blast after an engine failure forced it to blow up the rocket shortly after liftoff. The mishap potentially complicates Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk's goal to send humans back to the moon and to deep-space destinations including Mars.
So, this is SpaceX's Raptor engines TROUBLE in the first launch...
The largest and most powerful rocket ever built finally took flight this week. Until it didn’t.
SpaceX’s Starship was lofted into the air over the Gulf of Mexico by its Super Heavy rocket booster this morning, passing through the highest point of stress on the vehicle during flight.
The silver spacecraft was approximately 39 kilometers above the Earth when something went wrong. Instead of seeing the two stages separate and Starship continue on its way, observers saw the vehicle begin to tumble before it burst apart.
SpaceX said afterward that it had activated a self-destruct system onboard both the booster and the Starship, ordered after Starship experienced those problems.
"The vehicle experienced multiple engines out during the flight test, lost altitude and began to tumble. The flight termination system was commanded on both the booster and ship," SpaceX explained in an update a few hours after the flight.
A still from the launch live stream that showed the bottom of the rocket does offer at least one clue: Perhaps five of the Raptor engines on the rocket booster failed or simply didn’t ignite.
Let's consider these two cases:
Firstly, it's very possible that there was some debris that shot up after the prolonged ignition that im11111mediately damaged those engines.
The engines that were out may have been due to launch mount FOD hitting the engines. Look closely next to Booster 7 and there are large chunks of probably cement flying straight up next to Superheavy almost up to Starship.
For the second potential reason, this is probably not the first time SpaceX Raptor has experienced an incident like this.
