SpaceX New Gen Lunar Raptor Twice Powerful than ever Revealed ...
Continuously upgrading—that’s how SpaceX is getting closer to achieving major goals like returning to the Moon and reaching Mars. One of the clearest examples of this progress is in Starship’s most important system: the Raptor engine.
Excitingly, the first prototype of the newest Raptor version has just been revealed. Even more thrilling, it could soon power SpaceX’s future missions to distant destinations.
So, what improvements has SpaceX made to the Raptor engine? And how will it give them an edge over the competition?
Let’s dive into it on today’s episode of Great SpaceX.

When we talk about the Raptor engine, many of us are still amazed by last year’s reveal of the Raptor 3 version, with its mysterious black color and incredibly simplified design. The performance numbers released were just as jaw-dropping. But have you noticed? What we’ve seen so far is only the sea-level version of Raptor 3. Remember, every Raptor version comes in two types: a sea-level version and a vacuum version. So where is the Raptor 3 Vacuum?

Recently, it seems the first prototype of the Raptor 3 Vacuum has arrived at Starbase. Much like its sea-level sibling, this new version also shows a cleaner, simpler upper design, where many small external systems have been removed or integrated into the main structure. True to its role, the Raptor 3 Vacuum is larger in size, featuring a much wider nozzle optimized to generate maximum thrust in the vacuum of space.
We are still waiting for more detailed images of this new engine to get a closer look at its full design. However, even the early glimpses are enough to suggest that big things are coming. The appearance of the Raptor 3 Vacuum — along with even larger future variants — is already shaping the missions SpaceX is planning for the Moon and Mars. For example, the Human Landing System (HLS) version of Starship, built to land on the Moon for NASA’s Artemis program, and future Mars-bound versions will use these vacuum-optimized engines.
