The Château Comtal de Carcassonne was built largely in the thirteenth century, probably after the Treaty of Paris of 1229. Courtines and towers have come to literally frame the former palace of the Viscounts of Carcassonne as well as the Sainte-Marie chapel. The Palais des Trencavel which gave that the Place de l'Orme, then became a royal fortification in the heart of the City.
The castle, rectangular in shape, is separated from the city by a deep moat and defended by two barbicans, the barbican is turned towards the city while the West Barbican descends to the edge of the Aude.
The six towers are pierced with stirrup loopholes; the curtain walls and the top of the towers can receive hourds. Today, the fortified shirt of the castle supports a reconstruction of hourds between the door and the tower of the Major.
The western flank of the Castle, against which the palace is built, is defended by a watchtower, Tour Pinte.

The entrance to the Castle and access to the rampart are not free, but organized visits allow you to discover part of it.
