The collection contains pieces for various instrumental combinations, including flute, recorder, violin, viola da gamba, and harpsichord.
The music in Essercizii Musici is characterized by its technical virtuosity, innovative harmonic language, and rich musical textures. Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist. He was one of the most prolific composers of his time, with a catalogue of over 3,000 works, including operas, sacred music, chamber music, orchestral suites, and concertos.
Born in Magdeburg, Germany, Telemann showed an early aptitude for music and was largely self-taught. He eventually enrolled at the University of Leipzig to study law but also continued his musical pursuits. In 1704, he became the director of music at the Neue Kirche in Leipzig, where he composed his first church cantatas and began to gain recognition as a composer.
In 1708, Telemann accepted a position as Kapellmeister in Sorau, where he composed music for the local court and established himself as a leading composer in the region. He later served as Kapellmeister in Eisenach and Frankfurt before settling in Hamburg in 1721, where he spent the remainder of his life.
In Hamburg, Telemann was appointed the director of the city's five main churches, where he composed a vast amount of sacred music, including cantatas, oratorios, and Passion settings. He also established the Collegium Musicum, a weekly concert series that featured performances of his own music as well as works by other composers.
Telemann's music was highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was considered a leading composer in Germany. His style is characterized by its melody-driven, galant approach, which emphasized clear and accessible melodies over complex counterpoint. He also incorporated elements of folk music and dance into his compositions, giving his music a lively and expressive quality.
Today, Telemann is still widely admired for his contributions to Baroque music. His works are performed regularly by orchestras and ensembles around the world, and his influence can be heard in the music of later composers such as Bach and Handel.
