BWV 624 "Hilf Gott, das mir’s gelinge" Chorale Prelude [harpsichord & organ]
Listen to our rendition of BWV 624 arranged in a new chamber setting for harpsichord and organ. We played this piece as an introduction to a Telemann cantata "Weicht, ihr Sünden" – there was no big organ for all three parts, so we split them. Cantus Firmus and bass was for the chamber organ, while harpsichord did the figuration and the bass as well.
Live recording of the concert on 10. November 2023

Background:
The Orgelbüchlein (BWV 599-644) is a pedagogical collection designed to instruct organists in liturgical music, specifically the Lutheran chorale tradition. The collection covers the liturgical year, from Advent to Trinity Sunday, and includes preludes for specific feast days and seasons. Hilf Gott, das mir’s gelinge, BWV 624, belongs to the group of preludes for the season of Easter.
Structure and Musical Analysis:
Hilf Gott, das mir’s gelinge, BWV 624, is based on a 16th-century Lutheran hymn by the German composer Johann Walter. The chorale melody, also known as the cantus firmus, serves as the foundation for the prelude. Bach's treatment of the melody in this prelude is both elaborate and intricate, demonstrating his mastery of counterpoint and harmonic complexity.
The piece is written in the key of G minor and has a 4/4 time signature. The structure of the prelude is a three-voice texture, with the chorale melody in the soprano voice, accompanied by a highly ornamented and intricate middle voice, and a steady, supportive bass voice.
Legacy and Recordings:
Hilf Gott, das mir’s gelinge, BWV 624, along with the other chorale preludes in the Orgelbüchlein, remains an important part of the organ repertoire and a testament to Bach's genius as a composer. The collection has been studied, performed, and recorded by generations of organists since its inception, with notable recordings by renowned organists such as Helmut Walcha, Marie-Claire Alain, Simon Preston, and Ton Koopman.

📜ABOUT LEONART MUSIC:
🎹 The channel to bring you beautiful harpsichord music and baroque organ music. 🎹
👋 Hi, I‘m Nenad Leonart, a ⚜️ baroque musician based in Switzerland 🇨🇭
Mostly I’m playing harpsichord solo and baroque organ (sometimes also clavichord and other historical keyboard instruments).
I believe strongly that this world 🌍 can change through music and beauty 🎵✨ and I live for music with all my heart. ♥️
📚 I studied in Zurich, Switzerland as a harpsichordist. Later I started my own concert series as well as a music video production studio in the Leonart Studio and started out as an online content creator of Baroque Music for historical keyboard instruments.
Next to all these activities I also work as a church organist, concert harpsichordist and basso continuo player. 🎹
🌞 My inspiration is J. S. Bach – and more current artists like Andreas Staier, Gustav Leonhardt and Jean Rondeau. I quickly fell in love with their individual harpsichord sound and am very thankful for their contributio to the baroque music community. ⚜️
Over the years, I started to strive and connect early music & historic traditions with contemporary possibilities in technical development. The modern means of sound production offer endless ways to pursue true authenticity in performance practice. 🎶
