After a long two days of travel, we have made it to Thailand. We are here in Bangkok
and we are looking to explore this city. Yeah, and one of our favorite ways to explore a city,
as you know, is by eating all the amazing food. And one thing we learned, especially in Morocco,
is that if you want to learn about the street food of a city, the best way to find what you're
looking for is to hire a local guide. So that's what we've done today. Bangkok food tour. Let's
go eat. Hi, we're Jeff and Angela and we're Pure Detour. Last year, we quit our jobs to travel
the world full-time. This month, we'll be exploring and eating our way through Bangkok,
Thailand. So we are off on this food tour. Hidden Bangkok Tours has picked us up from
the metro station. We are in a tuk-tuk. We are on our way to our first stop. I want to introduce
you to our amazing guide, Aum. Aum has actually taken us here to his own neighborhood where he
grew up. Yes. Sawadikap. My name is Aum. I was born and raised in this neighborhood.
I used to be a monk in this temple. Yeah, in this temple. Yeah. And yeah,
today I'm going to take you guys to eat what the local people eat. You'll see the real authentic
Thai food. And of course, you know with me and Angie, every meal is going to start off with
a glass of wine or a cold beer. All right. So we are going to start from their winged bean salad,
which is like their... I'm not really sure if you guys know winged bean salad.
It's kind of like a long bean, like string bean. Okay. But this one, the green one, right? So
they chop it and then they mix with the coconut flakes. Just fry the coconut and then put it on
top. And then they put some coconut milk in here and then some minced chicken and prawn. And then
you can eat with the egg. So they put the sauce and there's some peanuts. And then when you put
in your mouth, it's kind of like the curry and that crunchy, crunchy curry with the salad. So
good. It's crunchy. It's really crunchy from those shredded up beans. It's got like a gorgeous
sweetness from the coconut milk, a little bit of spicy. That is an amazing salad. We got a great
big chili on here. This is the bean salad. That's awesome. So yeah, so a lot of people said like
when I ordered this one, right? The snack catfish. This is kind of like a lost menu for Thai food.
Because like when you guys think about Thai food, right? Mostly like the people say,
Oh Pad Thai Tom Yum, right? But actually like Pad Thai, it's like we got in trend from Chinese
people. But this fish, not so many restaurants like still like their have this kind of menu,
this menu anymore. The way they cook, right? They fry the fish first and then they make a salad
sauce like separate. And then they put some gao rice, like the gao rice, like they're kind of
like almost grinded. And then some of the shallot, onions, lime juice, and they put the mint on top.
So when basically like you put on top of the hot rice and then you eat together and then you show
it, it's kind of like crispy, crunchy, spicy. And then it's kind of like lime juice like
wallowing in your mouth. Can I help you? Please. Yep. Go ahead. Yep. Yep. Get with the mint.
Okay, got a big piece of the fish here. Great big old chili on top. That is so good. Crunchy.
The food here is amazing. Food stop number one finished. Now this is not only a food tour,
it is a sightseeing tour. Check this out.
After a stop to check out the gorgeous lights at night at Wat Arun, we are off to our second
food stop, which is actually in one of the smaller Chinatowns here in Bangkok. And the
breeze in this tuk tuk is so welcome after the heat of the city. Also, I think it makes my hair
look great. What do you think? I don't know. Cheers. Your hand and then you can make it like
a ball like this. Make it like a ball like this. See, like the skill. If you have the skill enough
and then the rice wouldn't stick in your hands, right? Make it like a ball. And then you pick
one of the meat like this. And then you dip with your hands into the sauce. This sauce is like the
lime juice and tamarind. And then you put it in your mouth. That sauce is amazing. It's got like
a sweetness and a sourness and then the smoky and fatty pork. That's amazing. Am I doing it right?
This is like the traditional style, like the northeast of Thailand food, which is called
Isan food. This is like the hot curry pot with the charcoal. And then this is like the raw pork.
With raw egg. So now what I'm going to do is like I'm going to kind of boil the pork first.
And then I'm gonna like squeeze or like mix together with the egg and some of the special
sauce from this restaurant. And then here they already got some like the herb in here.
They got some galangal, ginger, some lemon gas in here. But still not enough like for their
right Thai food. So I, you know, I normally like to squeeze these basil. Like this is called like
sweet basil. Squeeze a little bit. Get more smell. Yeah. And then this is morning gauri. Gauri here.
There you go. Then I put some cabbage. And then the last one is pork. So I put the whole pork in here.
Yep. Sorry. Let them cook. And then so easy. And then just this.
I should be talking to you guys a lot more about all the food and everything that we're eating
here. But I'm kind of in heaven. This is my favorite cuisine in the world. I've waited a
very long time to get back here to Thailand. So I'm just enjoying myself here. So amazing food
at the last stop that we just had their home has brought us over to another little market here
where we are getting an ice cream that is made with egg yolk. There's egg yolk
mixed into the ice cream. And it's topped with coconut and corn. Let's give this a shot.
And then she scoops only the egg yolk. Then now she's putting in the ice cream.
Let the cold right. The freeze. Melted with the coconut ice cream. Coconut ice cream. Yeah.
And some corn. I'm gonna get a really egg yolk piece and corn. I see corn on a lot of desserts
around here but I've never tried it. So let's give this a shot. I really like the ice cream.
I'm not sure how I feel about the corn on it. Like the corn is good but I'm not sure
how much I like corn with ice cream. But the ice cream is amazing. The egg yolk is like really
rich creamy. Pretty good. All right I'm gonna try just the ice cream with the egg yolk first.
That's delicious. All right I'm gonna get a little bit of corn on it because this seems weird. I've
never had corn on ice cream before. To be honest with you you don't even really taste the corn.
The ice cream overwhelms it a bit. It's just a little crunchy piece to chew on.
So yeah. If you eat the corn on its own you taste it a little bit but that's fantastic.
All right getting a little bite here with a big chunk of coconut. That's it right there.
The coconut's awesome. All right I believe this is the last stop on our little food tour here.
Ole Miss brought us to another little place where they're getting sweet
Thai tacos. I have no idea what this is. Let's check it out. What's this orange stuff?
That's the sweet egg yolk. Oh that's egg yolk. Like shredded. Shredded. So the egg yolk also like
they're they put it as a as a cream right. Cool. And then that's a shredded. There you go. So
inside they put some like their soup here. This is a sweet taco. It's really crunchy feeling.
It's got a bunch of egg yolk in it and also like chives or green onions. So let's give this a shot.
Oh wow. Oh I was not expecting that. Okay well the outside is super crunchy but because all of
the egg yolk that's in there it's got like this creamy richness and like the onions you don't
even taste them as oniony. It's almost like a little bit of a contrast to the richness that
just makes it taste sweeter somehow. This is amazing. I was not expecting that. All right
here we go. This is unlike anything I've ever had before. I don't even know how to describe this
right now. This is it's extremely tasty but I really have no way of describing this to you
right now but it's delicious. That's going to close this food tour off here with Home and Hidden
Bangkok. Yeah if you guys are in Thailand be sure to check him out. We're going to leave a link for
