Carnival in Germany
Every year the streets of Cologne become a canvas for people’s fantasies and a stage for
satire and humorous messages.
It goes by different names in Germany. “Karneval” is the word used in the northwest of Germany, to say carnival.
“Fasching” is a more common term used in southern Germany and Austria.
However, in some areas it also goes by the name of “Fastnacht”, derived from the old German word “fasen” (to be foolish, silly, wild”).
Each little town will celebrate it’s own carnival, with a parade where sweets and roses are thrown to the bystanders.
The “Rose Monday” parade , takes place on Carnival Monday. It is among the most prominent parades. Germany’s biggest carnival parade takes place in Braunschweig, northern Germany, on Carnival Sunday.
It’s called “Schoduvel”, which translates to “scaring away the devil”. The Braunschweig carnival dates to the late 13th century.
