How to Build a Perfect Cheese Plate in Minutes
The cheese plate is a good idea for a party. Are you looking for ideas on what kind of cheese should be used or how to plate it? This video is for you. In this video, I will show you how to build a cheese plate and the features of each cheese as well.
Ingredients:
- Chevre: a fresh goat cheese that you should really have because of its soft texture and ease to spread. You can use mozzarella or burrata as a substitute.
- Le Chevrot: Chevrot cheese is made from goat milk, and contains around 50% of fat. When very young the cheese is moist in texture, at the later stage it develops a nice soft and wrinkled rind. Well-aged varieties can be used as a grating cheese. You can use Brie or Camembert if you cannot find a Le Chevrot.
- Bucheron: a goat's milk cheese, semi-aged, ripening for 5 to 10 weeks. Bucheron is distinguished by an ivory-colored pate surrounded by a bloomy white rind.
- Gruyere: is a smooth-melting type of cheese that's made from whole cow's milk and generally cured for six months or longer. It has nice saltiness, semi-hard, so you should serve it with nice thin pieces. Cheddar is a good replacement if you cannot find Gruyere.
- Mimolette: is a head-turner-the craggy French cheese made from cow's milk with aging times varying from 2 to 24 months. It's a hard cheese with a buttery, salty, nutty flavor and fudgy finish. You can replace it with Parmesan or Pecorino.
- Roquefort: Roquefort made from ewe’s milk, often considered one of the greatest cheeses of France. Roquefort cheese has a moist, creamy texture and a sharp, tangy, salty flavor. You may find other options for blue cheese, such as Gorgonzola or Maytag.
Some accompaniments to go along with cheeses are fruit and bread. The sweetness of the fruit will complement the saltiness.
- Seasonal fruit is a great selection from ripe pears, apples, red plum, grape to kumquats; in this video, I choose figs for its jammy taste
- Dried dates, dried apricot, turkish figs or prunes are all wonderful choices
- Honey or honeycomb nut
- Cracker with a mild flavor
- Bread (a baguette or olive bread is ideal)
Notes & Tips:
- It depends on your preferences and the size of your gathering, but 3-5 types of cheese are ideal for a cheese plate.
- Select cheese with different aging cycles for various flavors of the cheese plate.
- Give an entry point on the cheese for guests so that guests will feel comfortable breaking into the cheese and enjoy.
- If you cut cheese into wedges and fan it out slightly so that people know how they should be cutting it.
- Taking the cheese out of the refrigerator and putting it at room temperature for an hour will give the best cheese flavor .
- Avoid some strong flavors such as garlic, rosemary, or onion to preserve the nuanced taste of cheese.
- Best way to store cheese is wrap the leftover cheese with parchment paper and then loosely cover it with plastic wrap; this plastic wrap will ensure that your cheese isn't drying out. Remember not to wrap the cheese too tightly where there's excess moisture or condensation as it will encourage the cheese to rot.
