The Earliest Luxury Apartment in China

In 1924, an American built the Blackstone Apartments, the most luxurious hotel apartment in Shanghai. Now located in Fuxingzhong Road, the building has 6 storeys and 31 units with free access to winter swimming pool, dance hall, tennis courts and private housekeeper service. The first premier of the Republic of China (1921-1949) ordered an unit here as his wedding room. The apartments attracted people from all walks of life. This September, we interviewed Soren Matz, a Danish designer and a tenant of the current Blackstone Apartments, and visited the old building that once flourished.
