The making of a World -Class Steinway Piano - A Steinway & Sons Factory Tour Narrated

Steinway pianos are as unique and full of personality as the world-class musicians who play them. They are the most meticulously handcrafted instruments in the world. However, in mass production, their creators are a dying breed: skilled cabinet-makers, gifted tuners, and meticulous hand-craft

Steinway & Sons Factory was first founded in 1853 in New York by Henry Engelhard Steinway, a German immigrant. A few decades ago, John H. Steinway (great-grandson of Henry E. Steinway) narrated an audio tour of the New York factory, where he described the age-old process of making a grand piano. Steinway. In 2011, Ben Niles, producer of the documentary Note by Note, synchronized the audio tour with today's footage of the Steinway factory. This video gives us a glimpse of what goes on in the making of the piano. Here is the brief process described:

Although Steinway has always been at the forefront of using and perfecting the latest technology that can make pianos better. But their pioneering manual methods are still used today to ensure quality standards. Because there's a fact they've found: some things are always better done by skilled craftsmen than by machines. For that reason, many parts of the Steinway construction process have remained essentially unchanged for generations. Up until now, each Steinway grand piano takes a year to build and it involves the work of many skilled craftsmen working together in a long process.



Steinway & Sons pianos are manufactured in only two factories worldwide - one in Astoria, NY and the other in Hamburg, Germany. Within a decade, Steinway pianos have won major awards and have featured high demand. By 1900, factories in New York and Hamburg, Germany were producing 3,500 handcrafted pianos a year. For over 160 years, STEINWAY & SONS has dedicated itself to creating world-class pianos.
