O. Henry, an American short story writer, is the author of the well-known short story "The Gift of the Magi." The tale initially appeared in The New York Sunday World on December 10, 1905, and on April 10, 1906, it was included in O. Henry's book The Four Million.
The story revolves around James and Della Dillingham Young, a young couple. Despite their lack of money, they decide to give each other meaningful gifts on Christmas Eve.
Della sells her lovely long hair to purchase a chain for Jim's platinum pocket watch. Jim buys tortoiseshell combs with jewels for Della's long hair by selling his valuable watch.
The narrator ends the story by comparing these sacrificial gifts of love with those of the Magi in the Bible.
This touching tale about the two main characters' love for one another leaves us with the impression that the most precious gift on Christmas Day is the expression of love, rather than material items.
O. Henry, also known by the pen name William Sydney Porter and born William Sidney Porter, was an American author famous for his short stories. He also wrote poetry and non-fiction.
O. Henry was born on September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina, and died in New York City on June 5, 1910.
The O. Henry Award, given annually to the best short stories, is one of Porter's legacies.
