Polo, often known as "The Sport of Kings," is thought to have been played in Persia some 2,500 years ago, making it the oldest team sport in recorded history.
Watch the brief history of the sport of Polo in Egypt, from its origin to the present day.
We used multiple digital platforms to promote the spectacular 4-day event taking place for the first time in Egypt from April 27-30, featuring six international teams competing on the beach.
In Egypt, the sport of polo appeared during the Ayyubid Dynasty in the 12th century. The first Ayyubid king of Egypt, Saladin, was a fan and his army also enjoyed playing polo while training.
Polo has a long history in Egypt, dating back more than eight centuries. Today, the sport was organized initially through the Khedival Sports Club, now the Gezira Sports Club. Polo matches were in their earliest days, perhaps as early as the late 1880s, and the polo season became an important activity of international society.
