Building without Nails - Amazing Medieval Carpentry
This video shows you the use of medieval carpentry techniques to build a house without nails. All the woodworks are completed by simple hand tools; no modern machines needed.
This instructive film explains the customary French timber frame. Vanaajamaja conducted a carpentry class in Estonia that concentrated on the thousands of years-old scribing technique utilizing a plumb bob. Prior to scribing irregular (hewn or twisted) timbers, it is important to mark the vertical and horizontal centers by level on both ends of the log and snap the lines. This is because all scribing is done using the center lines (axis) rather than the square rule when the sides of the timbers are being used as reference. This method can be applied to sawn or planed wood. All the frames of a house were built in 5 days by experienced carpenters and inexperienced students using only hand tools. And the Amazing thing from this video is that all the work is done by hand, not by machine.
Key moments:
1:23 Use an ax to cut a large piece of wood
4:49 We have to refer one axis this distance
8:06 You link the two marks
9:19 Cut perpendicular at right angle
12:59 So this is square
14:37 to take this distance with the compass
19:14 we can't have an axis to to plumb it
20:39 one here in the middle of the tie beam
27:52 we will cut here
29:28 very precise not to move
