🏰🪓 No machines. No shortcuts. See how a real castle is being built using 13th-century techniques.⏳🔍

Fortified castles and cathedrals are the most iconic examples of medieval architecture. And yet, even after so many centuries, they still hold secrets within their solid stone walls. The biggest riddle of all: How were these monumental buildings constructed using the technology of the time?

In 1995, a group of audacious archaeologists took on a crazy challenge: To build a medieval-style castle using only medieval methods and materials. They’re still at it. In Guédelon, in the forests of Burgundy, a castle rises, stone by stone, tier by tier. Why set themselves such a difficult task nearly a thousand years too late?

This exercise in experimental archaeology will add to our knowledge of the Middle Ages. By pitting 21st-century theories against 13th-century experience, all this heavy lifting will smash preconceived notions and build a new foundation for understanding medieval architecture. Short of taking apart an existing medieval castle, the Guédelon project is perhaps the only way to truly unlock the secrets of the medieval builders. By examining each part of the castle in turn, we’ll discover how the most emblematic structures of the time were built.
