Hey guys, it's Mike Chen. Thanks for watching the vlog channel. A couple things. I know this is really confusing
and I'm really, really, really sorry about this. We somehow published the first
Italy vlog and then the third Italy vlog without publishing the second Italy vlog, which is the time I spent in Venice.
So really, really, really sorry for some reason we skipped over that one. But here it is. Enjoy. Thanks for watching.
Last time I saw you I was about to take a nap and I just want to say the nap went really, really well. Crazy dreams, though.
It's about five o'clock here in Venice and I am starving. It's food hunting time. And to pray,
it might have to be a pizza and a gelato. Only thing is, it looks like it's gonna rain here.
It doesn't rain much here in Venice, apparently, but it is gonna rain tonight.
A little water ain't gonna stop me from my pizza. I don't know if the bed-and-breakfast gave me
recommendations to a good pizza place. Let's try to navigate to it.
Ah, this is the place right here. Oh, right beside this awesome church I was supposed to go see, too. Sitting outside eating a pizza.
It's everything I thought it would be. Red basket. They always bring out these little breadsticks.
So soft.
This would be great with the clams I just ordered.
It's like bamboo breadsticks. My appetizer before my pizza. Clam and mussels and red sauce.
Oh, heck yeah.
I'm so glad I got a bread basket and two extra pieces of toaster bread because this sauce...
I was told you come to Venice, you got to eat the seafood. Definitely taste how fresh it is.
It's not very acidic and it doesn't taste simple. It's a little peppery, a little sweet.
Really mild tomato flavor, which is what I like. I don't love the burning in your heart really acidic tomatoes. This is mild. It's gentle.
You can taste the delicious olive oil right here. A little hint of fresh herbs. Let's dip the bread right away in this.
This is really two dishes in one. You've got the seafood,
then the sauce on its own with the bread. That's like a whole entire uniquely delicious dish on its own.
I might seem silly because it's my first
restaurant in Italy,
but this is a great recommendation
from the local B&B owner. Can't wait for my pizza. First pizza in Italy. It's like seeing a Grand Canyon for the first time.
It's a splotchy mocha here. Pizza is one of my all-time favorite things in the world, and I get it.
This is Venice. This is not like a pizza city, but still. It's pizza Italy. That itself is exciting.
All the ingredients kind of in the middle. It's really not sliced for you.
You're supposed to just kind of fold it up and eat it, I guess. It has buffalo mozzarella,
which is so much better than regular mozzarella. Mozzarella that's only made in Italy. The taste is so much richer
than regular mozzarella. Fresh basil.
Pizza in Italy for the first time.
How do you describe like
your feelings when you see a beautiful sunset over the Pacific Ocean?
Again, Venice is not a pizza city. I don't expect this to be the best pizza I'm gonna have in Italy,
but it's just amazingly awesome. Oh heck yeah.
The dough is almost melty, and that buffalo mozzarella.
The reason they don't give you a lot of buffalo mozzarella,
because it's expensive and you'll want like 20 pounds of it on your pizza.
And oh my god the tomatoes.
I know my Italy pizza experience is only gonna get better from here, and that's the exciting part.
Apparently it never rains here, and this is just like a really nice drizzle that I appreciate. So maybe I brought the rain.
I'm not sure. It's just so incredibly beautiful here. You take a bolt to your house.
You literally have a molt outside your house. I wish I had that. These bears keep getting into my garbage.
Dinner number two.
Yeah, come on. You can't expect pizza to be my only dinner, right? I got some grilled sardines. This is supposed to be pretty good.
It's like a lot of little bones. I don't even know exactly how to eat this. Maybe you just eat it the whole thing?
Oh, it's cold.
That is yummy. A little citrusy. I like the sauerkraut. Really nice olive oil on that.
This is the baklava they recommended. It was like creamy codfish on toasted little toasts.
It's like a codfish salad. Really really creamy. I don't know if this restaurant is like really good. It's just right next to my hotel.
And it's a really busy shop.
It's not bad. I think I like the sardines more than the codfish.
First full day in, well last full day in Venice. I should have stayed here longer.
Breakfast. This is a very Venice thing. These are called tramezzinos. Little sandwiches.
They kind of remind me of the egg sandwiches in Japan. The crust is cut off. It's on soft white bread. A variety of toppings.
I think I'm gonna go for the spicy salami and eggs. My soft little egg sandwich.
I feel like I'm gonna damage it. It's like an egg salad. This thing has tuna inside.
I can't resist egg and tuna. A couple of my favorite things. I saw this sandwich in the front and it's a focaccia.
It's a focaccia bread.
Salami. Look at this.
I wish the cheese was a bit more melty. I feel like I got two very contrasting sandwiches.
The other one, really soft bread.
Soft eggs, tuna.
And then this thing.
Toasty on the outside. Salami. And this one, it's way bigger. I used this as a face mask.
Oh, that salami. That is by far the most flavorful salami I've ever had.
It's toasty.
Slightly spicy. You can see all the bits of fat in here. This has a ridiculously deep, porky flavor.
That salami is 100% the star of this sandwich. I mean the bread is fantastic. The cheese is mild. But that salami. That's Beyonce's center stage.
I would eat this for breakfast any day of the week.
I'm still a little jet-lagged, but this thing just completely woke me up.
Today I'm gonna visit some of the best churches in Venice.
And this was recommended by my bed-and-breakfast host.
Piazza San Marco. That is
pretty darn majestic.
This kind of reminds me like a little bit of Versailles right here.
Oh, you can actually go on top of that. I mean looking at something that was built like a thousand years ago, it's just
makes you feel something, you know? Those seagulls are kind of lined up pretty even. I'm just missing one like right there.
This is so pretty. This is why I call window shopping.
Look at the upside-down popsicles.
Oh, it's good. This is ricotta cheese with sesame. Look at this. This is the first time I'm having ice cream with sesame seeds.
That's borderline mind-blowing right there. It's sweet. I didn't get that huge hit of sesame flavor.
It's like really surprisingly good. I didn't expect this to be that good. This is like a wild berry cheesecake.
That's awesome. This is creamy. It's fruity. It's cheesy.
I think this place is a lot better than the last place. And I'm gonna be trying out a lot of gelato places.
It's Italy, you know? You can get gelato everywhere.
But it seems like it is getting better.
I'm getting an apron. I walked by this shop. What's your name?
Matilda is awesome. She's gonna sew my name onto my own apron. So this is really exciting.
This is my own personalized apron now.
You literally just rolled with a sewing machine and your penmanship is better than me with a pen. That's beautiful. Look at that.
Yes, beautiful, beautiful. Thank you. That apron was awesome. It's customized. She actually could write whatever you want.
Now I finally have something to wear when I cook.
This is a crazy morning in Venice. All the waterways are blocked for a competition.
So I gotta walk to the train station, but before I go,
this seafood place, first day I saw it, looks spectacular.
Definitely want to get some. This, fried fish,
shrimp, octopus, and I think there's some grits on the bottom here.
This tastes really awesome. If it was piping hot,
this would be even better. Big old octopus.
This place is really good. Highly, highly recommend it if you're ever in Venice. Grits is creamy, a good flavor.
I mean, even though it's not fresh out of the fryer, the flavor is still ridiculous.
You can taste how fresh the seafood is. Great last meal here in Venice.
Now I gotta walk my way to the train station. I gotta carry like a 40-pound suitcase. Lots of fun ahead.
See you on the train. Walked to the train station.
If you guys wonder how I get my workout in when I travel, lifting like a 40, 50-pound suitcase up and down a bridge, I'll do it.
I think this is also one of those systems where you can turn these seats and face each other.
Okay, light plug. It's always useful.
That was a really good workout early in the morning. Two hours until Florence, the land of steak.
Just saying that makes me emotional.
Welcome to Florence!
