Nordstrom 1901 Haul & Try-On | Fall 2018 Casual Basics

What's up guys? I'm Brian Sacawa, you're watching He Spoke Style, and today we're unboxing and trying on some clothing from Nordstrom's 1901 collection. So I recently ordered four items from the 1901 collection, all great casual basics. I've been wanting to try the 1901 collection for a while. I think the style is great, the price is right, and I'm looking forward to checking out the quality. So let's see what's in the box. First up, we have a pair of taupe suede Chelsea boots called the Brooks Chelsea boot. I got them in a size 9, my usual size. Like all Chelsea boots, they have the elastic goring, which makes them very easy to slip on and off. These have a leather upper and a rubber sole. I really like the taupe color. I have a couple other pairs of suede boots, but they are a darker brown, so I thought a lighter pair would give me some more options, and I have actually been on the lookout for a color like this for a while. Next, here we have an olive green military jacket. This is a perfect lightweight transitional layer. It's made with a cotton canvas, has a zip front as well as button closures, buttons on the cuffs, two flapped pockets on the front, and two slanted pockets on the side. It has a little bit of a lining which takes it out of the shirt jacket realm and more into the traditional outerwear space. Next is a classic rugby shirt, dark navy, long sleeves, contrasting white collar, the traditional three rubbery buttons. This fabric to me feels a little thinner than other rugby shirts I've owned in the past. It's very soft though, so it'll probably feel really nice once it's on. Finally, a long-sleeved nautical striped t-shirt. I think t-shirt is a little bit of a misnomer. This fabric is much thicker than you would think of if this was truly a t-shirt. I've always wanted this style of shirt. It's pretty close to the one that Cary Grant wore in To Catch a Thief, but not exactly. I think it's a really versatile casual piece and one that I imagine will be worn quite a bit this fall and winter. All right, so now let's try this stuff on. Starting off here with the rugby shirt. As I mentioned, the fabric is thinner than other rugby shirts I've owned. Again, it is very soft. The fit is a little more snug than I would have expected. Typically, I've found rugby shirts to be on the not baggy side, but the looser side of things. The sleeves here are what I feel are the most tight, which would definitely help make this shirt a good shirt to layer. I could definitely see throwing on my tweed sport coat with this for a very classic Ivy style kind of preppy look. Okay, next is the long-sleeved nautical striped t-shirt. This is a small, same size as the rugby shirt, but as you can see, the fit is a little looser, which I like. Sleeve length is good, overall length is good, so you could definitely wear this shirt untucked for something more casual, and it could very easily be tucked in as well. This one is totally a winner. All right, here is the military jacket. Great, lightweight, versatile, casual transition piece. I think this looks awesome with jeans, very rugged, but I think you could also throw this on with a nice pair of gray flannels and maybe like a cool loafer for a nice high-low kind of thing. The jacket fit, now they call this a regular fit, but for me, it seems to have more of a tailored fit, which is a good thing. It's not too loose, it's not too tight. This jacket fits really great. Finishing off here with the taupe suede Chelsea boots. Love a good Chelsea boot. You know if you've read He Spoke Style for a while that I like to call Chelsea boots the loafers of the boot world. They're easy to slip on and off, and they're just very comfortable. I like the color contrast between the boots and the dark denim. I mentioned the sizing earlier. I took a size 9, which is my normal size, and these boots fit perfectly, and they're very comfortable. Overall, I am extremely pleased with all these items. As far as casual basics go, I really don't think you can do much better. The fit is right on, the quality is extremely good, and the price is fantastic. One other thing I will say is that if you have never shopped at Nordstrom online, the experience is really great. They ship very quickly, the return process is very easy.
