Deng Xiaoping is the mastermind behind China’s economic reform and open-door policy. But just like Mao Zedong, Deng had a succession crisis. It happened before, during, and after the June 4th student movement. Chinese leader’s history is the history of perpetual infighting and constant purge of those with different opinions within the Chinese communist Party. The 1989 Tiananmen Massacre exemplified the CCP’s brutality in constantly sacking of real or imagined rivals and critics. China’s reformists, by now, are gone as they were wiped out during the early stage of China’s reform.
