Six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy engaged in an epic battle known as the Battle of Midway (June 4-7, 1942). The U.S. Navy’s decisive victory put an end to the threat of further Japanese invasion in the Pacific.

Japan targeted Midway to defeat the American Pacific Fleet and establish a base there for upcoming military actions in the area. This operation was also seen as a warm-up for future attacks on Fiji, Samoa, and Hawaii itself.
Incorrect Japanese assumptions about American reactions and poor initial dispositions jeopardized the plan. Most importantly, Japanese naval code was cracked by U.S. code-breakers, enabling American leaders to plan their own ambush.
The Japanese were also under the impression that The U.S.S. Yorktown, an aircraft carrier that had been damaged at the Battle of the Coral Sea, would be unavailable at Midway. In fact, the damaged carrier was really patched up and prepared for combat after only two days at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard.

At the conclusion of the Battle of Midway, Japan had suffered an estimated 2,500 deaths, had lost four carriers, a cruiser, and 292 aircraft. The U.S. lost the Yorktown, the destroyer USS Hammann, 145 aircraft and suffered approximately 300 casualties.

The Battle of Midway turned the tide of the war. The naval power of the United States and Japan was roughly equalized. Three years after the combat took place, the war came to an end. Today, monuments like the Battle of Midway National Memorial and Chicago Midway International Airport honor the conflict.
This is the first in a three-part video series about Operation MI.
