Building A Perfect Medieval Castle

Castles dominated not only warfare, but also society in Europe's Middle Ages. Strongholds have existed since the beginning of time, but the medieval castle was unique in that it served as both a refuge and a projection of military force, a lordly residence and a symbol of power, and a center of justice and government. Castle ruins can now be found from the Atlantic coast to the hills of Syria, serving as dramatic and poignant reminders of a bygone feudal era.

The castle had no single blueprint: each one was unique. The video presents how to build the perfect castle by analyzing key trends over four centuries.

We track the history of the castle back to the feudal system that developed in France around 900 CE, and examine the early motte-and-bailey castle, which the Normans used to conquer England and Wales in the 11th century.
Then we explore how castles developed into stronger and more complicated structures with the addition of stone curtain walls, enormous keeps, towers (square, round, and D-shaped), as well as potent gatehouses, barbicans, machicolations, and moats.
