Brilliant choice, gentlemen.
Benedict Cumberbatch is a perfect actor to take on the role of Doctor Strange.
Give yourselves a pat on the back.
Thank you, sir.
Yeah.
Did you write that down?
Yes, sir.
So which character are we choosing next?
Next up, we have the Ancient One, Doctor Strange's mentor.
He's a masterful sorcerer from the Himalayan mountains
and is located in modern day Tibet.
Oh, yes. A very important character.
You hear that, gentlemen?
So are there any up-and-coming Tibetan actors that could play this role?
Well, sir, you're not considering
casting an actual Tibetan to play the Ancient One, right?
Why wouldn't I?
Well, it's just we would be saying goodbye to 1.3 billion potential customers.
You know, the Chinese Communist Party would never be happy
showing a movie with a prominent Tibetan character.
They've been persecuting them for like 60 years.
It's very politically sensitive.
We wouldn't want to be accused of being political.
Well, I mean, of course I knew that.
I was just testing you.
Well done. You pass, by the way.
So who are we going to get to do this?
Jet Li, Chao Yun Fat.
Sir, you're not serious, right?
No, no, no. Of course not.
Too cliched, huh?
Who's big these days?
Oh, I know.
Donnie Yen's all the rage.
He does that wing chum kung fu in his IP Man movies.
He does. This character does do kung fu, right?
Sir, but if we cast a Chinese person in a Tibetan role,
won't the viewers think that we are saying that all Asians look alike?
So let me get this straight.
If we cast a Tibetan actor, we risk enraging the Chinese communist regime.
But if we cast a Chinese actor, then we get criticized for being racist.
Yes.
What are we going to do?
Well, we could change the ancient one's origins.
Oh, I like where we're going with this.
How about Greek? Overdone.
Roman?
Nah. Asgardian.
What is this, Dr. Thor?
Got it.
Celtic.
Ooh.
Like Legolas.
Precisely. Like, like, like Irish.
I like it.
Wait, hold on.
You guys are kidding, right?
The ancient one is Asian in the comics.
If you change that character and make it a white person,
you're going to infuriate a lot of Asians everywhere.
Remember what happened in the last airbender?
This industry is full of whitewashing.
We should promote diversity.
She's right. We need diversity.
I know what we need.
A Celtic woman.
Brilliant, sir.
OK, so who should we cast?
Pass me my shortlist.
So I've got a few here.
Now, let me see.
Aha. Now, I know she's been in pretty much every movie we've ever made.
But how about Scarlett Johansson?
Oh, it seems she's busy.
I think she's turning Japanese.
Yeah, I really think so.
Oh, such a shame.
She would have been so good.
Oh, well, let me see.
See who we've got here.
Ah, there is one other who I think could pull it off.
Yes.
Gentlemen, say hello to our new Ancient One, Tilda Swinton.
Hey, guys, I hope you enjoyed that skit.
We enjoyed making it for sure.
There's been a lot of controversy about this particular issue
and people are talking about it.
So we thought it'd be interesting to kind of imagine what
it could have been like during the process of casting the Ancient One.
Yeah, we understand in this particular case,
the situation was probably extra complicated for Marvel
since they had to deal with the Chinese government as well.
So it's all good, Marvel.
We still love you.
We're still going to go see that movie, right?
Probably. Yeah.
We're also interested in what you have to say.
