Car Camping! 🚗 My First Time Sleeping in my Land Rover Freelander Conversion
Hi you guys, I'm just about to leave on my way up to North Wales. I want to be
visiting the Glidders this weekend so with the nights drawing in I'm going to
be arriving there. Just before it gets dark I reckon I'm
going to be sleeping in my car. So those of you who follow my Instagram
will have seen I've been spending some time and some money
converting my car which is a Land Rover Freelander into a little car camper.
I've not tried it overnight yet and I'm really excited. I think it's going to be
really cozy.
I'm here, that was a gorgeous drive and it's so beautiful here.
I am expecting rain today so the first thing I'm going to do
is pop up a tarp at the back of the car just to give myself a little dry area
for when it does rain and when I've done that I'll show you
around.
Stay there! I don't think that's going to peg in there is it?
Nope, that doesn't work. These pegs aren't going to go in the ground
so what I'm going to do is I'm going to tie it onto my wheel hubs.
It'll be fine, just don't drive off when it's still attached to wheels.
Right so that's those two corners tied off to the wheels.
Now this bit is going in the twee. I think that's okay, yay!
Like a little tent at the back of my car, I love it.
I've also had to tie a point out to my windscreen wiper
because it was starting to sag a bit already.
You know, hopefully that'll be all right, if not might take my
window wiper off but they're kind of overrated aren't they?
It's starting to rain, right let's show you around.
Okay so we've got this massive chunk of foam here
and the lovely wooden base thing whipped up by Ash Outdoors UK.
Thank you Ash, I love it. And a couple of little storage things here.
These, they just hold it all in place while I'm driving around.
So get rid of those. I've got all my bedding and pillows
is in here as well, all ready to go. So this all folds down lovely into my boot.
It's sort of low enough that it doesn't interfere the windows or whatever,
fits perfectly. I've got water in here, this side I've got spare dry clothes,
my tarp lives in there, I've got some spare shoes, got a spare blanket in case
it's cold and the quilt isn't enough. So what I need to do first is put the
back seats down and tilt the front seats forward and put
this bed up. So in the back I've got these two boxes,
this one here is my food box. It's got all my food and stuff in it.
That's not for tonight by the way, that's just like
loads of food so if you ever need it it's there.
So I'm going to put these forward as far as they will go
and then my boxes, food and whatnot, fit nicely in there.
Wiggle that in. My food box and my wood box fit in there really nice and snug
and they sort of bridge the gap there as well.
Now for the magic. Just unfold the foam and all my stuff
and there it is, that's the bed. So I've got here
these are some little black net curtains to go on the windows.
Do those in a bit. This is Buns. Hello. He says hi and he sits there.
Hey Buns. I actually love it in here so much, I feel like I could just live in my
car. I'm just gonna sort out my pillows. So
I've got four pillows in here. One pillow, two pillows, three pillows, four
pillows. So that just fills in that little gap there.
See where the foam ends there so that makes a really nice
cosy bit. It's cute, isn't it? This is I think supposed to be one of those
things, you know, that you put in your windscreen
to stop frost overnight but I'm going to be using it as an
anti-weirdo device. So this is just going to cover
my windscreen and it's got magnetic bits in it so it sticks to your car.
Well cool. So I think that and then this side
and then these bits tuck into your car door.
That's no more weirdos. Next job is I'm gonna put up my little nets on the
windows. I love it. Right, these are just little
suckers. Oh it's like a little house in here.
Okay. Oh my goodness that is wonderful. So that's the net curtains up. I'll show
you. That is so cool isn't it? So you've got
the front covered over with the windscreen cover and then
net curtains on the other windows. What I've done here
as well is I've stuck on some just some of this
anti-slip stuff so I can put mugs of drink or
whatever. I've got my phone on that one and it
won't slide off. What I've also done with the windows
is attach these, I think they're called wind and rain guards,
along the top and what they do is stop the rain getting in if I have the
window open a crack which you will need to do
because there will be condensation. You need to let some air in so
I can have the window open one or two inches to let the air circulate.
Let me show you what I've got in my drawers.
That sounded wrong for it. You know what I mean.
In this one I've got a torch, batteries, a spare power bank, little cloth here,
some gloves, bin bags, candles, notebooks,
paracetamol things there and this one's all my toiletries
and this one is all my cook stuff so this is like my kitchen drawer.
It's got pans and fuel, plate, mugs. Amazing. I think that's
everything ready. First time I've set it all up before
properly for sleeping in so yes just getting used to it all.
I love it so much. So yeah I'm just gonna chill out now,
just enjoy the peace and quiet. So I'm gonna make some coffee and have something
to eat. While I do that I'm gonna stick up a
little run through of how this was made and whatnot. So here's how I
turned my car into a bed and what it cost.
The first thing I did was to measure the boot space of my car so that I could
have a wooden platform made to fill up the boot space when the
back seats are down. Ash kindly grabbed some wood that he had
lying about, whipped me up a sturdy platform with his mantles.
I then sanded it down and popped in the foam layer which will act as my mattress.
This is a three inch thick piece of upholstery foam which is
50 inches wide by 50 inches long. I used a bread knife to cut the sides to
fit the interior lumps and bumps of my car.
This slab foam cost £80 so this was the most expensive part of the
conversion. Next up I got myself two 20 litre storage
boxes to fit the space between the front and back seats which cost £8
for both and another two 32 litre storage boxes
to use as drawers under the wooden platform.
Those cost £11 for both. I got some storage baskets to create
compartments in the drawers, they were £5.50 for a few of them.
And then I made it all cosy with a bottom sheet which was £7,
a single duvet which was £10, a bedding set for £9.50,
four pillows for £8 and four pillowcases for £8.
The non-slip mat cost £2.70 for a 120 centimetre roll,
the magnetic windscreen cover cost £6.66
and the rain and wind guards for the windows cost £36
for the set. And then my little black curtains were £12.89 for four of them.
So the total cost for me to convert my Land Rover into a sleeper was £205.25
just over £200 so even after only using this a few times
instead of getting the cheapest hotel it would have paid for itself.
Bargain.
I'm gonna get to bed now I think guys.
Before I do I wanted to say a massive thank you to you guys for 40k subs.
That's crazy. I'm so touched honestly.
I also want to do a quick shout out to Karen from Wild.
Karen is a female like myself who goes out adventuring.
She is Dartmoor area so changes scenery.
She's really great to watch, great personality, really bubbly and I love what she's doing.
So please check out her channel.
Let's get ready for bed I reckon.
Oh it's so comfy.
So much luxury.
Spoiling myself.
All right guys I'm in bed.
I've got the windows open about two inches.
That will help some with the condensation situation.
I don't know if it will eradicate it completely.
Have to see in the morning.
I don't know if you can see.
So if I put my legs straight my feet are still on the foam down there
and if I want I can shuffle more up that way.
I'm all right here at the moment.
So I'm five foot six and a half.
If you're a lot taller you're gonna have less room but you can lay
diagonal as well to give you more room.
I'm laying straight in mine but if I was taller I'd lay diagonal.
I've got my little basket that's just got my clothes and phone and book
and I'll put my head torch in there.
So just stuff that I might want to get hold of in the night.
I am so snuggly and warm and cosy and I am just loving life.
I'm absolutely loving this.
It's awesome.
I don't know if I'll be able to sleep because I'm kind of excited
but I want to go up a mountain tomorrow so I'm gonna try.
All right guys I will see you in the morning.
Night.
Rain's really coming down.
Morning.
Hiking clothes on.
Apart from this which I'm taking off in a minute.
So I got to sleep must have been about three o'clock in the morning last night
just because the rain was so heavy and it was so loud.
I didn't set an alarm because I figured I'd be up at like the crack of dawn as usual
and I woke up just before 10 o'clock in the morning.
So I'm starting my glitters trip a bit later than anticipated but that's fine.
It's been really really gorgeous.
I've absolutely loved doing this and I genuinely can't wait to do it again.
There are a couple of issues.
There was some condensation on the windows which I expected.
It was fine though.
I just wiped it up with a towel in the morning and it wasn't to the extent
it was like dripping down getting my stuff wet.
So do bring a towel if you're going to do this to wipe your windows down.
This bit here did get a little bit damp because I don't think I put the tarp far back enough
and there was some water coming in under the tarp and dripping down.
Not a great deal.
Just a little bit.
It wasn't a problem.
But yeah all in all lovely, cosy and yeah absolutely loved it.
I'm gonna head off now to the glitters.
I'm hoping to do one night there.
Probably glitter flower up around Devil's Kitchen Way.
Do a camp out in my tent.
Not used the tent for ages.
That's the plan.
Thank you so much for watching guys.
See you again soon.
Bye!
