Hoof care is extremely important to a horse’s well-being. In this video, I will show you how to rescue this unfortunate horse with long hooves, which affects his ability to walk normally.
What you’ll need:
- Rasp
- Nippers
- Hoof Knife
Step-by-step instructions to care for horses with long hooves:
Step 1 (0:29): Determine the coffin bone's position
Step 2 (1:08): Chop off the excess part of the toe
Step 3 (1:29): Trim the excess heel growth and clean the heel
Step 4 (3:47): File down the hoof wall
Here are a few tips for better hoof care:
- Find a professional farrier to take care of your horse
- Schedule regular trimming and shoeing, ideally every six to eight weeks
- Maintain good hoof balance
- Provide horseshoes for better therapeutic support to structures in the hoof
- Choose the right shoeing for different weather and footing conditions.
Remember this old saying, “If there’s no hoof, there’s no horse.” It is vital to keep your horse’s hooves in proper shape and condition is important. Regular hoof care will help the structures stressed evenly and keep the edges from chipping and cracking.
