The first instalment of the "Web Edit Wednesday" youtube series. In this first episode I tell the story behind the first trick in my "Ryan Williams Web Edit 3" the frontflip over the 5 flat 5 handrail.
This trick was a huge factor in Web Edit 3 and I needed it to kick the edit off with a bang. A lot of preparation went into getting this done and it has sentimental value because 10 years previously I jumped for the first time in my Ryan Williams Minivid 1!
What's up YouTube?
Welcome to Web It At Wednesdays.
Every Wednesday I'm going to be going through my Web It At 3 tricks one by one and explaining
the stories behind them.
Don't mind what I'm wearing this week, it's the 4th of July today as I'm filming this
and we're going to a white trash party so I think I'm dressed for the occasion.
I've got some tats, some fake ones obviously, but nonetheless the first trick we're going
to be doing is the front flip over the handrail.
So that was the first trick in my Web It At 3 so I thought it'd be good to start with
that one.
I know it's going to be hard for you to take me seriously with this outfit on but just
do your best and we'll start off with where this idea came from.
So I first ever did this stair set back about 10 years ago on my first video, I actually
got the clip.
It doesn't have sound but here's the clip from me attempting it and crashing and then
landing it.
So as you can see that was a long time ago and it was filmed on like basically a potato
but I was like 12 years old and that was my first ever video I ever made and I will
make a reaction video to that because I did find it and I really did enjoy watching it
again so that'll be in the future but that's not the only time I ever used that stair set
in a video.
I actually used it in my Web It At 2.
You might remember I did it inward over it, I'll show you the clip.
Yeah so basically I inwarded over it in Web It At 2, it was a really good clip, a good
street clip and I don't know, I never did anything but jump it and then straight inward
over it so I've never really done any tricks other than that and I knew I needed something
big and I didn't want to just front flip over the stair set because a lot of people had
already done that so I really wanted to front flip over the handrail.
I knew because it was a kink there would be a little bit of space for me to actually front
flip over it.
It might be a little bit harder because it is a flat kink but I knew that it was on level
with the stair set, like the top of it so I knew that as long as I went fast and jumped
as high as I could I'd be able to clear it so that's where my idea for that came from.
So the day before I did it we actually went and checked it out because I wasn't sure exactly
what the rail was set up like and I couldn't remember how long the stairs were, how deep
the stairs were and I really wanted to calculate everything out because I'd never done a front
flip down a stair set before and I really wanted to prepare myself to do it and do it
over the handrail.
So basically we went there the day before and I sussed out the spot, I jumped the stairs,
got a little quick clip of me jumping the stairs just to see how high I would actually
have to hop to make it over the handrail and then later that night we went to Ramp Attack
and that's an indoor skate park close to me and they actually have a foam pit there so
I was practicing hop front flips going really fast like to simulate how fast I would go
to hit the rail.
So there was a lot of calculation involved and I got my fronties dialed at the foam pit
and then we turned up the next day.
So till the day I actually tried it I'd never jumped over the handrail, I didn't really
see the point in jumping over the handrail the day before because I knew that if I was
going to do it I would just do it.
So on the day we turned up and we got a bunch of drone shots because obviously this had
to introduce my WebEdit 3 and this was really one of the most important clips I had to get.
It was the last clip I ever filmed for WebEdit 3 so I had Nicky there, I flew him up for
the week and we got a bunch of clips before that like my back foot nose manual 180 fakie
frontie and stuff like that but we knew that this was the clip that I flew him up to get
and all the intro was all coming up to this so it was a make or break situation and that's
why I did so much calculation to it, that's why I did so much practice in the foam pit
and then on the day I mean I jumped the handrail a few times, I got a few clips of that, we
got a bunch of drone shots and one huge problem that we ran into was the fact that I only
had Nicky to film and all my other mates were at work or they were out filming so I actually
made a Facebook status and I was like who can get down to Kings Beach where it was at
and man a camera because we had a few shots that we wanted to get and there was the one
tripod shot that we could get by ourselves but then there was the drone shot because
I recently got a drone from DJI and I really wanted like a downward shot of the stairs
so Nicky was going to set that up and then we were going to get someone to man it but
we didn't have anyone to man the drone so yeah I just made the Facebook status, got
a bunch of my mates to come down, like 4 of them ended up coming out, shout out to them
but we managed to get heaps of different camera angles so that was perfect and I'm so glad
that we got that done.
Alright so we had everyone set up, we were all ready to go and I had my practice from
the night before so I was pretty pumped so I jumped the handrail a few times, I got some
practice footage of that that I'll show you that I was just like amping myself up to do
it, feeling out how much of a landing, like harder landing it was because that was a big
deal with me, I don't know, when you do a front flip it like almost makes the landing
harder because you not only drop to the ground, you flip and like spin yourself into the ground
so there's a lot harder force when you hit the ground, I just said hit the ground so
many times but whatever, yeah so I was like testing that out, feeling it out and then
I was ready to go and this is the first attempt right here.
Alright first jump, just going to jump it straight, turn around and then let's start
webbing at 3.
You got this bro.
It's for you, let's do it.
So yeah I thought I had it the first attempt, it all felt good, everything felt sweet as
but I just landed a bit back heavy and you can actually see how much my bars bent back
so not my bars, my bars didn't actually bend but it was my clamp, my clamp like stretched,
it was a brand new clamp, I don't know if that was a good or bad thing, maybe it wasn't
worn in but I landed and it just like stretched back and my bars nearly snapped out of the
clamp, nothing broke yet so I was like alright next try, I got to get this, as I walked up
to the top of the stairs again to go again I realised that my bars were, they were like
yanked back so they were right on my lap and I wasn't ready to do it with my scooter all
stuffed up so I decided to undo my clamp, redo everything and then I went back down
and then Nick there and I was like alright here we go, let's do it, we good?
Yep.
Okay, alright here we go.
So I ran back to start again and I was waiting there and the drone had moved so we had to
get Nick here to run over and reset the drone which took a little bit of time but I was
just amped and like the whole time I had Wolf Mother playing in my ears like the song that
I used for WebEdit 3 because I was visualising how it would go and I knew exactly when I
wanted the beat to drop when I landed so like I was listening to it as if I was watching
the video.
So I knew alright this is when I got to land it, this is when the song's going, let's play
this out in my mind and then go play it out in real life and that's basically what I did
so the second time I hit the play button on my iPod and I'm like alright here we go, I
only get one more shot, I reckon my scooter was going to break, I knew I couldn't withstand
any more jumps and I knew this had to be the one and I sent it.
Oh my god.
WebEdit 3 done boys.
Yeah.
Everyone enjoy WebEdit 3.
That's just the start.
So yeah as you can see by my reaction I was super pumped, I knew that was all I needed,
that was like the last clip I needed to perfect my WebEdit 3 and I was so stoked to stomp
it even though my scooter basically broke when I landed I actually got clips of after
it showing you the clamp like snapped about to break so if I didn't land it that second
shot it wouldn't have happened that day and I would have had to go get a new scooter and
try and redo it when Nikko was actually flying out that afternoon so we might not have ever
got it done if I didn't get it done that attempt so it felt super good to get it done and thankfully
my bars didn't break the clamp just snapped but I got another clamp eventually but yeah
that was the start of WebEdit 3 and you can tell by my reaction that I just couldn't be
more stoked.
Two tilt clamps, two days.
My wheelie bar is going strong.
No seriously, imagine if I didn't land that one, just saying.
If I had to take a third attempt, sure we would not have been doing this today.
Shout out to whoever is getting me to do this and surviving.
Shout out to my mum for making me stick that one.
So I'm super pumped on how this WebEdit Wednesday came out.
I had a bunch of footage for this clip so I couldn't wait to do this and I'm glad I
could show you the history behind the stair set and how I did it 10 years ago and now
I front flipped over the handrail.
It's an awesome feeling and I hope you really enjoy these WebEdit Wednesdays because I really
do and I really like to tell the story behind the tricks.
So let me know in the comments what trick you want me to do next because I don't think
I'll stick to the order.
I think I'll mix it up a bit because I know there's a few tricks that you just really
want to see the story behind.
So let me know in the comments below and maybe the top comment, whatever trick it is, I'll
try to do that one next for you.
So make sure you smack the like button if you enjoyed my WebEdit Wednesdays and I hope
you enjoy all my future WebEdit Wednesdays.
But I'm off to a 4th of July party.
