When we think of San Diego we think of sunny weather, beaches, and amazing Mexican food! Being right by the border of Mexico’s Baja California, San Diego is home to some incredible authentic Mexican food, as well as some twists on classics. So for our second adventure in San Diego we went on a FOOD TOUR and it was a delicious 24 hours of eating!

Yesterday we spent the day exploring all around San Diego and today we are going
on a San Diego Mexican food tour. It's no secret that Mexican food is our all-time
favorite food and lucky for us San Diego is located on the border of Mexico's
Baja California and is home to a wide variety of Mexican spots. While we wish
we could try them all in this video we are trying five different items ranging
from tacos to more unique local eats. It's kind of a rainy day there's nothing
better to do than just to stuff your face. Kind of tomato-y. Our first stop is
at Kiko's Place Seafood. It's a mariscos truck which is a seafood truck so
naturally we are here for fish tacos. So we got their OG fish taco which is Baja
style so it originates from Baja California Mexico and it has deep-fried
white fish there's cabbage there's tomatoes I see and then it comes with a
creamy white sauce and then we added this orange looking brown chipotle sauce
on there mmm looks so good. Oh yeah that's a big piece of fish in there. Wow
that is ridiculously delicious there's a ton of fish in there you can see and
then the breading on the outside is so crispy and flaky oh man it's got a nice
good crunch there and then you have all the crunchy veggies on top the white
sauce is very creamy the chipotle gives it a little spicy touch but man all
these textures and all these flavors just work together so well. This is this
is awesome. Stars is so dang good. Mmm that crunch is so dang good and the fish
is so just tender and flaky and moist on the inside oh and this chipotle sauce I
know that doesn't come on it normally but it gives it such a nice smoky
flavor so it's a very very good addition. Yeah this is turning me into a fish fan.
All right on to stop number two. For our next stop we headed to Ocean Beach which
is where we had hoedads in our last video so make sure to go check that
video out to see a massive burger but today we came to a spot called Mike's
Taco Club to try two iconic San Diego food items. So this bad boy is a
California burrito this is only half of it the other half's right here this
originated in the 80s and typically it has carne asada beef there's tomatoes
there's guac there's onions cheese and its most notable feature are french fries
stuffed inside this bad boy. This burrito is bomb. The meat in there has
such good seasoning on it so salty and tender you can just taste all the
different spices and then all the textures with the the pillowy potato in
there you got the guac flavor all the fresh veggies and wrapped up in this
beautifully little crispy tortilla. Man this is a ridiculous burrito so good. And
the second item we got are, if I can get it open, carne asada fries. Oh my goodness
you can't even you can't even see the fries because it's just loaded with
toppings. So these also originated in San Diego in the 1990s and it said that they
originated at Lolita's Mexican restaurant but it's not a hundred percent
certain where it originated but I'm just glad it did because this looks so good.
It's basically the same thing as Adam's burrito but just not wrapped in a
tortilla so we have fries down here, carne asada, some pico, some sour cream,
some guacamole, oh and cheese. These fries look like they have a seasoning on
them too they kind of have a little bit of like an orange spicy looking flavor
to them. Yeah french fries by themselves amazing but then just load them up with
cheese and meat and other goodies and you really can't go wrong. This is
dynamite. There's just so much going on in this in this giant bucket here. We're
at one of our all-time favorite taco shops in the entire United States, Tacos
El Gordo. We have locations in both San Diego and Las Vegas and we've been to
both multiple times and to be honest one of the reasons we were excited to come
back to San Diego was to get to have it again. So they serve a variety of
different meats and different food items but we're here for the adobada
tacos which is a marinated pork and then it's roasted on a what's called a
trumpo or like a spit and so they have the tortilla in their hand and they're
like shaving the meat off. They'll shave it off and then they'll put the sauces
on it and then they'll put the toppings. They just do it all super fast and it's
super impressive to watch them. I'm so excited about this and we actually ran
into a subscriber named Luis while we were in line to pay and he bought our
tacos which was so nice so thank you Luis. We really appreciate it and this
one's for you. Cheers. Oh it is just as good as I remember. I dream about this
place all the time. It just really takes us back to being in Mexico City and
having al pastor tacos like five times a day while we were there. The tortilla is
the perfect just like consistency and texture. It's a little bit chewy. It's not
too dry. It has a little bit of moistness to it. The meat is just so flavorful. The
sauce is so flavorful. The meat also has a little bit of like a crisp on it from
being on the trumper. It's the perfect taco. We also got some sides of
pineapple to go with it which I think will make it just even better. That is
just excellent. Sweet. A little bit of spicy. Savory. Salty. Creamy with the
sauces. Crunchy with the fresh onions there and even though they
shave the meat so thin it's still just so juicy. Like Catherine says there's a
little bit of crisp from the trumpo turning. It's just so good. A little bit of
pockets of fat on some of the meat there. Just every flavor and combination is
just delicious. If you've never been to Tacos El Gordo before the ordering
process can seem pretty confusing at first. They have different lines set up
that correspond to different meats and different food items. So they have an
autobata line, a carne asada line and then some other lines as well. So you may
have to hop between different lines using your tray to get all the different
types of food and tacos that you want. And we've had quite a few different
things here and everything's been delicious but you just have to get the
autobata tacos. They are my favorite kind of taco. They're just the best. We just
made a quick pit stop at Northgate Market which is a Hispanic grocery store
chain here in the area. This place is so amazing. They have so many delicious
Mexican treats and food as well as your typical grocery store items. We went last
time we were in San Diego and that location had these vats of salsa. It was
one of the coolest things ever to see as big salsa lovers. They didn't have it at
this location but they still have all their homemade salsas there. So we grabbed
some salsa, some chips to take back to our campsite to enjoy later once we're
hungry again. For our time here in San Diego we're staying at the Tijuana
River Valley campground. It's basically right on the Mexico border. Just on the
other side of that big hill there is Mexico which is pretty crazy. It's a
brand new campground. They got really nice campsites and there's yurts right
there as you can see. And for the three nights we were staying it's only $80
which is a pretty good deal. We've got one more Mexican food spot that we want
to check out but it wasn't open today so we're gonna go check it out tomorrow. But
for the rest of today I think we're gonna maybe crack into those chips and
salsa but more than likely just lay down because we are both just so dang full.
For our final stop on this Mexican food extravaganza we came to Ed Fernandez
restaurant Birria for birria. Birria is a traditional Mexican food dish from the
state of Jalisco. It's marinated and stewed beef or goat meat and here at Ed
Fernandez they use beef. And we got ours in the form of queso tacos. Oh my
goodness. We've had birria tacos one other time back in Austin and we loved
it so much and we've been so excited to try it again. And first impressions, one
this tortilla looks so incredibly fresh and homemade. The meat looks so juicy and
tender and then oh all that melted cheese it's gonna be so good. And we also
got a side of the consome which is basically the stew and then we're gonna
dip the tacos into the stew. Although right now I'm like I don't know how I'm
gonna do this without spilling all over myself. Look at this they load it up with
meat. This is a hefty taco. Oh shoot it's dripping everywhere. Oh that cheese
I saw it. It's so messy but it's so so good. It's so flavorful. But honestly the
messier the food the better it is. I think I think that's the motto. Man that
is so beefy, so cheesy. The tortilla like Catherine said is spot-on, so fresh. And
then you got all the toppings on there. This taco is just amazing. Tender, juicy
and then in the consome and you have to get the consome because it's just all
this meat beefy flavor just boiled down in there with all the marinade. It's just
super concentrated. Oh my gosh it is just heavenly. So good, so hearty. One final
thought on this corn tortilla because this is probably the best corn tortilla
we've had over the last day. It's nice and thick and sturdy. It's kind of almost
like a corn cake. And a normal store-bought corn tortilla would have
been in pieces at this point. But even though this is so juicy there are no
cracks. This thing holds up so well. It has been so fun and so delicious here in
San Diego. And while we love it here and wish we could stay for many months
there's just so much more in California we want to explore. And next up we are
heading on a road trip. So lately I've been getting a few comments about my
Spanish pronunciation and how it's pretty good and I'm pretty proud of that. But
the word birreria is the hardest Spanish word I've ever come
across. Can't get it. Still not saying it right. Birreria. So it's supposed to sound
something like this. Birreria. But don't do it the way the English Google
Translate wants you to do it. Don't do it this way. Birreria. Birreria. That's not right. We know that's
wrong. As we're sitting here thinking about how hard that word is to pronounce
I'm thinking to myself I need to do Duolingo every day. I really want to
learn Spanish and coincidentally Rosetta Stone literally as we're sitting here
just emailed us wanting to sponsor a video. It's like they're here. They're
listening.
