Hey, welcome back to Make Build Modify. Today I'm going to take an antique
sewing machine and turn it into a lamp. First I had to take all the hardware off
and all the loose pieces and I was still kind of brainstorming on how to get
the lamp through the center of this chassis so I had to kind of inspect in there and
see see what was in the way and there's a lot of parts and pieces in the way.
Even in the front here there's the portion that drives the needle and the portion that
drives the foot and all that had to come out. These things are built very well.
I'm very surprised at how strong and how precise these parts are put together.
While I was trying to loosen the front end here I had to crank
on that wheel and I cranked so hard that I actually broke the rotary portion of that.
It was coming out anyway so it wasn't that big of a deal but
pretty much all my strength to snap it.
I'm just cutting the upper and lower rod to remove the needle driving portion. I want the
upper and lower rods to go back in once the lamp's in but I needed to get this little
wing-shaped piece out and I also have to get that rotary portion out so I'm going to cut the shaft.
Here's a good trick if you lock your sawzall blade into the center of your channel locks
and clamp down you can hold a sawzall blade very well.
So I just snapped that loose right at the end. I got tired of cutting.
That came right out after that and I'm just going to run the lamp cord right through that hole.
So I'm just going to line up some of the pieces and put them back together.
So now I have to begin lining up the light bulb and see where I have to cut a hole in that plate
because I need that bulb to line right up with the center of that
hole that goes down the shaft of the chassis of the
sewing machine.
So I couldn't find a hole saw that was perfect but I got one that was close enough just a little
undersized so now I have to clean up this hole with just a little rotary tool.
I kind of just worked at it until I got the piece to fit perfectly.
And I was just sanding off some of the dirt and grime here on the face portion that's going to be
facing outward. And I've done this before in other videos. I just heat up the metal plate
just enough to you know make the paint dry fast so I can get to work.
This is a lamp that I bought at a local big box store and I'm just
dismantling all the portions so I can run the wire through the sewing machine.
So I'm just using a piece of wire to fish through there and just tying the lamp cord to it and
pulling it through. And I don't show it here but I actually ended up having to take part of this
rear portion off so it would fit in there. Once I got it all tied up it was too long so
I ended up cutting off that little grommet that threads in.
But it was close. Very little modification to get it to go.
So there I'm just lining up the upper and lower shafts again to make it look like they're
solid. Once that plate's on it'll just look like the light bulb's kind of just
magically coming out of the face of the sewing machine.
Let me test the light bulb. Now I'm just putting the pieces back together.
Okay so now I just have to install some legs and I needed to actually put these little,
well feet rather. I had to double up the feet because the hardware sticking below this
was too far out from that wood. So I needed to offset the entire frame away from
the desk or the wall depending on how you install this. This can be hung or be used on a desk.
