BAREFOOT BRITAIN_ Episode 9
We're in Aberdeen!
That's terrible Aberdeen accent isn't it?
That was probably like Glaswegian coming out in me.
We have a little group of runners, well actually a massive group of runners,
which is very very exciting.
So Chris has just told me that this beautiful scenic route
that I picked on the map
is actually taking us through
a fish plant,
sewage works
and landfill.
And I can confirm
that it smells like fish,
poop and rubbish.
From 10km to 10 miles.
How are you feeling?
Amazing. I'm tired.
You just said you can't walk up steps at the moment.
No.
You did so well, honestly.
Thank you so much for coming.
Thank you, thank you.
We're down to just two runners with me now.
Jenny and Chris.
And we might have missed the turn off
so we've just run an extra mile and a bit
round the road.
And we are now about 7 miles from Stonehaven
and some famed ice cream.
I'm not emotional, that's just wind tears.
We have finished for the day.
Jenny and Chris, high five.
Well done.
And this is
Auntie Betty's
where I'm going to get an ice cream the size of my head.
It's a pretty miserable day.
Just trying to take myself away from the running today.
I'm listening to an audio book.
Trying to just imagine that I'm not running
and just keep my legs moving
and I'm living for the coffee stop at halfway.
I know it's oil and it's a bit gross
but I love running in the oil.
It's like running along a rainbow road.
It's cheering me right up on the miserable day.
I look out.
And the problem with taking a coffee stop
is that it's really difficult to get going again.
So I'm just going to start running,
warm myself back up
and get back into it for this afternoon.
I've got eight miles to go until St Cyrus.
Sam has just appeared like a mirage
outside John's Haven
and we're on our way for the final few miles
to St Cyrus today.
And she's re-perked me up.
And what started as a very miserable rainy day.
Did you ask the rain to stop?
I did totally.
So we've set ourselves to cruise control
and we're just cruising in now all the way.
How are you feeling?
I'm alright.
Yeah, you're doing grand.
I'm doing well.
We've been advised off this trail
by some passers-by
but we've decided we'll just have it anyway.
It's a bit overgrown.
But we're on an adventure.
And that is the end of today's run.
Sam has led the charge on that section.
That was a bit of an adventure, wasn't it?
Yeah, it was just perfect.
So now we've got to hop in the car
and go and give a talk.
Look at this sign!
Thank you so much, girls.
Look at that.
And we are off.
The Arbro footers are with me.
Arbro footers plus Andres.
And I'm very excited.
It's what I need today.
The legs are a bit sore.
So these girls are going to chat me through
the whole way.
Well, to Canusti.
Is that how you say it?
Canusti.
That's it.
Right, got you.
I've seen there's a lot of golf courses today.
Had my eye on them.
Actually, we're coming up to one now.
And then after that, you've got Canusti.
Now you've got three, four,
all the way to Broughty Ferry.
Perfect.
So like two cinderellas,
these two must return
from whence they came.
The clock has struck midnight
and they're going back to work.
Gail's giving us the direction for Dundee.
Straight, straight, straight.
It's me and Andres all the way.
So this is now the furthest you've ever run.
Yeah, pretty much.
If I go another step,
it'll be the farthest I've ever been from home.
And we've just seen some thunder and lightning.
So we reckon it's about four miles away.
But who knows?
Who knows?
Oh dear.
It's getting heavier and heavier.
It's only feeling good though.
It's really nice.
I feel like the sky is still clear.
Like where's it even coming from?
Unbelievable.
Stay optimistic.
That's what we'll do.
So we've stopped.
We've had halloumi fries.
We've had a shandy.
Well, I have.
We've had a ginger beer.
Thank you, Andres.
So good.
And Andres has decided he is in it to win it
for the last four and a half miles to Dundee.
I haven't stood up yet.
I saw him do it.
You were doing cheeky stretching while I went to the toilet.
I saw it.
There was some stretching going on.
But I reckon four and a half miles of shuffling
and we'll make it.
Halloumi power.
Gotta love that squeaky cheese.
Andres the giant is leaving.
He has done 18 miles.
Bam!
How are you?
He's got to get a train now and drive home.
And that is the end of today's run.
Oh, Andres the giant was just amazing.
Just beautiful energy.
Really got me through today.
I thought about four miles from the end I was going to keel over
when we stopped there for a little break.
But that is it.
I am done.
Time for a beer and bed.
