The global environment is facing carbon pollution. Extra greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere are the main reason that Earth is getting warmer. Pollution of carbon is one of the many environmental challenges facing the world today. However, a country isn't just carbon neutral, it's carbon negative. That is Bhutan with the famous concept of "Gross National Happiness."

Carbon negative' is a neat phrase. It means that the country's greenhouse gas emissions are not only reduced by its extensive forests but also by the generation and export of renewable energy.

By 2030 Bhutan plans to reach zero net greenhouse gas emissions and to produce zero waste. This means putting a comprehensive plan of action into place, with items such as increasing its reliance on renewable energy sources – like wind, biogas and solar power

What does Bhutan do?

Balancing economic growth carefully with social development
Environmental sustainability and cultural preservation
They believe in the Buddha religion
Their constitution demands that a minimum of 60% of Bhutan's total land shall remain under forest cover
Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product

Bhutan is a small, underdeveloped country with a GDP of less than 2 billion dollars. But all citizens are guaranteed free school, health care is also completely free medical consultation, and medical treatment are all provided by the state.

Economic growth is important, but culture and environment is more important. In Bhutan, 72 percent of the country is on forest cover. The government promised to remain carbon neutral. That is their uniqueness.

The country of Bhutan has shown how to balance the preservation of its culture and environment with the pursuit of economic growth. All countries can aim to maintain a carbon-neutral status in the future. Please take 19 minutes to watch Tshering Tobgay and his message to work together in the fight against climate change.

"I invite you to help me, to carry this dream beyond our borders to all those who care about our planet's future. After all, we're here to dream together, to work together, to fight climate change together, to protect our planet together. Because the reality is we are in it together"- Tshering Tobgay.
