We say goodbye to the big city, and go NORTH! This was our first Virgin Australia flight, just a short trip from Sydney to Cairns. The easiest travel day we've had in a long while, we are so excited to show you the cute town of Cairns!
About Us A Texan and Marylander join forces in travel and exploration to form: PEREGRINATION TRAVEL! We are Zach and Leah, a couple most recently residing in Texas who decided to quit everything and go on an adventure around the world. Our goal is to reach all 7 continents. That's right. ALL SEVEN CONTINENTS. Join us on this crazy adventure, and hopefully, you'll be inspired to start your own unique journey! Go peregrinate!
Cairns.
What's up Pea Nation?
We are in Canberra.
We are in Australia's capital and we came here to show you some balloons on our last
day in Melbourne slash Sydney before we go up to the Great Barrier Reef.
But the balloons have been cancelled.
But that's okay because we're going to take you on our first virgin Antarctica.
Africa.
Atlantica.
Virgin.
Virgin Australia.
Virgin Australia flight today.
It's going to be amazing.
We're going to go to the airport but first we're going to show you some shots of this
beautiful capital.
And just like that we made it to Sydney.
We're in the airport.
We dropped off my sister and now we're about to fly domestically to Cairns.
Cairns?
I always get messed up.
Everybody's saying there's definitely no R. It's spelled C-A-I-R-N-S and people call
it Cairns.
I think that might be with the Australian accent.
Like Cairns.
Cairns.
I don't know what's going to happen.
We're going to try and get into this lounge now though because we heard it's really hard
to get into it.
And then we'll see if we can get in there and then get on our virgin record flight.
Alright so we made it in the lounge.
It's a small one.
It's really small.
The lounge was very nice.
We got some munch dinner relaxing and now we are running to our gate.
We've never been on virgin before.
We hear that the lighting is like super nice so we're going to be able to sleep because
last night we only got like five hours.
I'm tired.
Because we tried to catch the balloon festival.
It didn't work out.
It's fine.
Yeah.
It's going to be nice.
We're all checked in and apparently it's...
And so we are not ready.
And we made it to Cairns.
To the airport.
To the town.
To the hotel.
I think we've ever had ever.
It's like the airport is literally 12 minutes car ride to town and we had the nicest Uber
driver.
He was like, what's your plan?
Oh my gosh.
You should do this.
You should go here.
This is free.
Don't spend your money.
I was like, oh, this is like having an actual tour guide who's a local telling us what to
do and what not to do.
It's great.
Everything just happened so fast because everything was so small.
The airport was so small.
The getting your bags part was so small.
I loved it.
Every drop off was so small.
Our hotel seems so small.
Everything is just so small.
And we're right downtown.
Yeah.
Like really close to the piers where all of the diving excursions go off from.
So when we have to wake up super early, we will be literally right here.
What?
Great plan.
Good morning.
It's so convenient.
It's not as hot as we thought it would be, but I think we do need some air conditioning
tonight.
It's not Florida.
It's more like North Carolina.
Alright, we are out and about.
Leah took a nap.
I didn't take a nap.
Oh, there's bats flying already and it's not, the sun's not even down.
We're going to find some shawarma, but we didn't talk about our road trip at all.
So we just finished our road trip and I would say we did way too much in the six days that
we rented a car.
Yeah, absolutely.
I mean, it was fine, but we had like too much to see.
I don't think we realized how big Australia was.
Honestly, it's too big to conquer.
We needed a month here, you know, 15 days isn't enough, right?
Well, okay.
So I would say that like we spent enough time wherever we were, except for in the city of
Melbourne.
We probably could have explored more of the city itself, like over two days.
The Great Ocean Road, we did that in like one and a half days.
Like that was the appropriate amount of time.
Sydney, we were there for like three days.
I think that was the appropriate amount of time.
I don't know, I feel like I could have spent more time there.
Personal opinion.
But I think we, deciding to drive was like, just, it took up a lot of time.
Yes.
Yeah.
And it wasn't even-
We didn't get to see kangaroos, like that's the other part.
It's like, we wouldn't have seen Australia's deer if we didn't go in a car.
Australia's kangaroos that are America's deer, that was our highlight, was seeing those.
So, you know, if you rent a car, just know that Australia's big.
It's huge.
And we would probably do it differently if we did it again.
Yeah.
Because we wouldn't do the whole outback.
We wouldn't do the outback in ten days and that wouldn't even be enough for that because
you have to drive north to south.
Right.
So.
I mean, we did it.
Alright, picked up the shawarma and we just want to tell you, Kansas is really interesting.
It's like the definition of a tourist town but it's not too big.
It's just really interesting that all these people come and they leave for the reef and
they come back and they leave.
And that's it.
Yeah.
It's crazy.
You can't even swim here.
There's crocodiles.
There's jellyfish.
You can't even swim on the beach here.
You have to swim in a pool here.
So, it's just like the launching point for going diving.
Whoa.
Look at the great bat migration.
That is.
Oh my gosh.
There's one.
Crazy.
Fruit bats are so big.
This is crazy.
I don't even know what's going on.
Whoa.
We saw bats like this in Sydney.
We saw them in Melbourne.
We saw them in small towns.
Never this many.
They just keep coming too.
It looks like they're coming from like a side street or something or like maybe from like
a really big tree.
But this has been like consistently going on for like five minutes now.
It's just too long.
No sign of stopping.
If you've ever been to Austin and you've seen the bats under the bridge, those bats are
like this big.
These bats have a three foot wingspan.
So big.
This pool, because the coast isn't really like a beach.
Like everything about this place screams beach town except for the beach itself.
It's like this marsh.
It's not just this.
Yeah.
So they have this public pool.
It's apparently the biggest lagoon in Australia.
That's what our Uber driver told us.
Correct us if we're wrong.
What?
And it's free.
There's like no barrier to entry and you just come in and you swim.
And it's not that deep, but they have like sand and there's a bunch of kids.
There's like also a bunch of like older people here.
And it's open from 6 to 9, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day except for Wednesday.
So it's a place to swim if you want to work out.
It's got like all this lawn area for people to just sit and have picnics.
They have like all these hot plate areas for you to make your food here.
Barbecues and stuff.
I'm impressed.
I had no idea that it was going to be like this.
But yes, we're just going to watch the sun go down behind us.
It's been a relaxing day.
Truly just like meandering through life.
This is like one of the easiest travel days we've ever had.
Probably because it was a domestic trip in Australia, first world country.
Yeah, that's true.
So we do have a scuba diving excursion lined up for tomorrow.
We are very excited about it.
And it's an overnight trip.
So we're actually going to be sleeping on a sailboat with like 12 other guests.
Well, 10 other guests.
We're two.
So 12 people total.
Small boat.
And we get to dive like four or five times.
And one of them could be an overnight dive.
And I don't know how I feel about that.
But Zach is very excited.
I don't know.
I don't like the dark and I don't like heights.
You're not heights.
I'm more worried about like the one jellyfish that will not work.
It's like a clone jellyfish that can kill you.
That's what I'm worried about.
You know, but our wetsuits have turtlenecks on them.
And the only part that's showing is our mouth.
So we would probably see it before its tentacle like killed us.
But that's what I'm worried about is the jellyfish.
You have a respirator in your mouth.
But this part's exposed.
I guess your face is exposed.
Yeah, you're right.
We'll see.
It'll be our first night dive.
Hopefully.
Fingers crossed.
