Replacing Our Old RV's Power Converter and Installing a Transfer Switch for Boondocking!
A power converter is an important electronic device for an RV. It allows you to charge your batteries from a 110V shore power connection. So when your power converter breaks, you have to rely on other methods to charge your house batteries. Ours broke and left us nearly 2 months without being able to charge our batteries on shore power.
Fortunately, we have a great solar system for our RV and we can usually top our batteries off by noon most days. And when our friends came down to join us in Baja, they brought a converter we purchased and even installed it while we watched in awe! It's a relatively simple job, but one that our friend Scott does for a living so we decided not to get in the way.
While he was replacing our power converter we also decided to add a 30 amp transfer switch that we hardwired directly from our Renogy 2000W inverter to our power distribution center. This transfer switch allows us to use every one of our power outlets whether we are on 110V shore power or boondocking and using our inverter.
It's a real game-changer in terms of simplifying our life on the road (and cleaning up the extension cord mess we had!).
