Hey guys, welcome back to my channel. Today's video is going to be all about
thrifting. So I will be sharing my favorite tips when it comes to thrifting
as well as some of my favorite things I've thrifted for my home.
I have been thrifting my entire life. My mom thrifted all the time as I was
growing up, so this was a really normal thing to
style your home with thrifted items. I loved how my mom was able to decorate
our home with secondhand things and I felt like it was almost a challenge
like to be able to do an entire room or to style like a nook in the corner
with only secondhand things. I always thought that was really cool.
So I definitely carried that on and thrifting has become a huge part of the
way that I shop and style my home. So as I was putting
this video together, I was trying to think of things that I have thrifted
around my house and when I was thinking of here like on
my main level, the only piece of furniture that is not
secondhand is the bench over here at my breakfast
nook and my kitchen bar stools. Every other piece of furniture is
secondhand. So whether I got that at a thrift store,
Facebook marketplace, yard sales, or it was given to me,
everything else right here in this main living area was secondhand.
So I thought it'd be fun before I get started with my thrifting tips
to first show you guys some of those things, some of those pieces that I have
thrifted and that we use as our furniture pieces.
So starting in the back room, our baby changing station
was something I found off Facebook marketplace. So this was secondhand
as well as our toddler bed. Moving into the breakfast nook,
our chairs and dining table were both thrifted
as well as this buffet. This was actually in my last video
and I share all about this but this was something that I found off
Facebook marketplace. Then in our dining room,
this brown wooden shelf and this dresser
right here in the corner. I picked those up at the same time at Deseret
Industries, our thrift store. And this hanging scale here is actually
something I made using only items from the thrift store.
This corner shelf, this was also picked up at the same store.
And then my dining table is actually the dining table from my childhood.
So my mom gave this table to me. And then the last thing
is our sofa and this was also found on Facebook marketplace.
So for the thrift store today, I am going to be taking you guys along with me
to Deseret Industries. This is a really popular thrift store
in Utah. That's where I'm from. It's also kind of more in the west coast when I've
looked up different areas that Deseret Industries is located.
I have found that their prices are the most fair.
However, I will say I have noticed since 2020
things have kind of been on the rise as far as pricing. So sometimes I still find
a really killer deal and then sometimes I find things are a
little bit overpriced. So I'm sure that you guys face the same
things at your thrift stores. So that's another part of thrifting is
it will always be a hit or miss. Sometimes you will find an amazing
piece and they're trying to charge almost full price for it.
I will show you an example of that of something that I found today
that I was kind of excited about until I saw the price and then I decided
against it because of the price. So the first tip I want to share with you guys
is always get a shopping cart. Even if you're going in to look for one
item, I always grab a shopping cart in case I see something
that I need to hurry and throw in my cart or it's too big for me to hold.
I always always always have a shopping cart with me.
Another tip I would share along those lines is if you are debating something
like if you see something on a shelf and you're debating it,
put it in your cart and hold on to it and then decide
as you are shopping if you want to keep that item.
There have been many times that I thought I might want something but I
left it off to the side and then after I thought
about it while I was shopping, I decided okay I really want it
only to see it leaving in someone else's shopping cart.
So just to avoid that, always put the item in your cart if you are
contemplating it at all and then you can put it back later if
you decide against it. Now I wanted to share some of my very
favorite things that I thrift. I always go to the same locations every
single time that I go to the thrift store.
I hit these same about 10 spots that I always check.
So the first one is as I'm coming up through
the clothes, there's a big open section that has furniture so you'll see like
coffee tables, couches, dressers, hutches, those kinds of things
like big items. I personally love swapping out
furniture all the time and so if I find something there that I would
rather have than something that I have at my house, I like to swap things out.
So I always check out those locations first like the center location
then I will head outdoors. So we have an outdoor section that has
a ton of random things, lots of wooden chairs, lots of patio chairs.
I actually scored an entire patio set. I will have that video linked below
because I did a whole thrift video when I got that patio set. All I had to
do was get some new cushions for it but the wicker was in perfect condition.
The patio set looked great so I will have that video linked below.
This is also the same place I've picked up every single one of my wooden chairs.
So the chair I'm sitting on right now, our dining chairs, breakfast nook
chairs, really any chair in my house has come
from this section of the store. This section also has some outdoor toys
and my kids love to check out these toys. I have actually found
some toys in really great condition here. In fact,
some of our Christmas toys came from there this year. So
my son wanted a kitchen set and like a playhouse
and I found our kitchen set here for only $4 where I think online it was
closer to $100. The next aisle I go down is baskets and if you follow me on
Instagram, I'm always sharing this tip. Always get
your baskets at the thrift store. This is my favorite place to shop for
baskets because you're going to be getting them for
50 cents, a dollar or maybe two dollars. I do have a basket right here. This is
probably the only basket that I've actually bought
full price just because I wanted a certain style
for my breakfast nook right here and I can never find this at the thrift store.
So this is really the only basket I've ever bought
at full price. All of my other baskets that I use for decor,
especially in the springtime, I always get at the thrift store.
The next place I like to check out is the glassware.
This is where you will find dishes, mugs,
just those kinds of things and those are always great to style if you just want
to use them as decor on some open shelving
or of course use them as sets and at the thrift store I've always been able to
find a set of at least six of everything. Maybe
that's just a Utah thing because our families are kind of big here
but I always find sets of dishes and if I didn't get it at the dollar store,
I get them at the thrift store. So I have a ton of glassware and dishes
from our thrift store. Another aisle I like to check out is the pitchers and
the vases and I'm actually going to show you a
that I picked up a few weeks ago and I used it for my spring decor.
I got this for a dollar. It already had a chippy finish on it and so I didn't have
to do anything to it but I feel like it looks perfect over
here in this corner. Another thing I like to check out is the
books. I always go to our books. So if you have a book wall like we do, we
have a holiday book wall that we swap out
for each season or each holiday. I like to stock up on
different seasonal or holiday books here. You can see here today I picked up
two books. One was 50 cents, one was a dollar and
this will go into our Christmas rotation. So right now on our book wall we still
have our St. Patrick's Day up. I do need to swap it for our Easter and
Spring books but most of these books were from the
thrift store. Along with children's books, I also love
to check out books that look old and rugged
or if I find a book that is the size that I want just for
decorating, just to use to style or decorate on an open shelf,
I will do tea stain on it. So if I like the book but it doesn't look old and
distressed, then I will actually do a little tea
stain DIY on it. I have a few ideas for a DIY video so I might show you guys
how to do that in an upcoming video. So make sure you
watch out for that. Another place I like to check out is the
kitchen area that has the wooden spoons, the rolling pans and in fact I picked up
a couple of those today. I love the different color wood that I
was able to find. This is also a place I love to get cookie sheets and
bread pans. I also love to find candlesticks and
anytime I find some that might be the style that I want but not the color,
then I will just give them a quick spray paint to get them the color that I want.
These gold brass ones that I found were actually just like this at the thrift
store and I've had these for a few years now.
One of the last aisles that I love to go down is the holiday or seasonal aisle.
I can always find the best things down this aisle. I love looking at the holiday
mugs as well as the Halloween. I always can
find really cute Halloween decor down this aisle but
the mugs and the dishes are some of my favorite holiday things
to look for. Alright well that's everything for this
video. I hope that this video inspired you to get out to your thrift store and
hopefully score some items. Sometimes I go and I find nothing,
sometimes I go and I have an entire cart full. Today was one of those good days I
was able to pick up quite a few things including a coffee
table and we are super happy with that find.
But thanks again for watching. If you haven't yet hit that red subscribe
button. Make sure you do that and we will see you in the next video.
