How good are Dyson stick vacuums? We bought the Dyson V8 Absolute in late 2018 and put it to use in our multi-story home. Do we like it?

We regularly host guests, and that calls for a lot of touch-up vacuuming to keep our place clean and ready for friends to stay over! These types of vacuums are extremely handy as they are lightweight, easy to handle, don't have a cord to deal with, and can do a good amount of work using the variety of attachments that come with the unit.

We use the smooth floor, carpeted floor, and crevice tools the most.

This is all pretty standard stuff for these types of light "mini-cyclone" types of vacuums. We chose the Dyson after one of our sons told us how happy they were with theirs.

So far, we've really enjoyed having this household tool. It's fast, light, and effective. It has sufficient vacuum, and the powerheads work just fine. The heads are easy to service - cleaning out wound-up hair, lint, and fiber. The battery holds up for a sufficient amount of time. You can run at medium or high. Of course, high "burns" through the battery faster, but you can run it in bursts and get a surprising amount done before putting it back on the charger base.

One initial concern is that the battery isn't modular. We have several cordless tools for the shop and we wish the vac manufacturers followed this approach as well. We'll see how it works out in the long run. It would be great to have another battery to grab and swap out when you do go through a battery!

The filters are easy to clean, and they DO NEED TO BE CLEANED regularly. This little tool moves a LOT of dust-laden air through the filters, so they do need to be cleaned after every few cleaning sessions.

The Dyson V8 (like their other models) let you know when there is either an obstruction in the head or pick-up tube or too much dust in the filters to allow air to move through at low pressure. If the airflow is impeded, the motor will "pulse" letting you know one of these areas requires your attention.

Based on our initial experience, we think that we'll have the Dyson V8 around for a long time! So, we mounted the charging base in our utility/mudroom, and cleaned up the wiring to it so it was neat and clean and looked like part of the room plan instead of an afterthought!

Additionally, we'll come back to this after long-term use and give you an extended review after several seasons of use. Watch for it!
