Nicolas Fouquet - DESPISED By Louis XIV: Nicolas Fouquet, Marquis de Belle-Île, Viscount of Melun and Vaux was born on 27 January 1615 in Paris and died 23 March 1680 in Pignerol, was a high-ranking French statesman, Surintendent of Finance under Mazarin and Louis XIV, and Attorney General at the Parliament of Paris.
He had considerable power and wealth. A promoter of the arts, Nicolas Fouquet attracted the services of the most brilliant artists of his time. Today, it is still possible to witness Fouquet’s greatness at the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte. Fouquet was however dismissed from his position and arrested by Louis XIV in 1661 for embezzlement. His properties were confiscated and Fouquet was condemned to life in prison.
After his fall, Nicolas Fouquet was posthumously talked about in numerous novels and films, notably Alexandre Dumas' Le Vicomte de Bragelonne
