Hey everybody, it's Pam at the Paper Outpost. You want to get a little crazy today?
Well, I happened to be buying some food coloring and then lo and behold, almost at the exact same
time, a paper lover connected with me and said, hey, she had an experience where she was shown
how to, or she saw some examples of people who used nonpareils. Yes, nonpareils. Nonpareils?
Okay, the only thing that triggered in my mind at that time was those little chocolate wafers with
these things on top, little white things. And I had to look it up because I'm like,
what is a nonpareil? I'm not even sure what that is. So I looked it up and I asked her if it was
the chocolate one. She said, no, no, it's the sprinkles on top. So I looked it up and yes,
it's also the sprinkles. And I also looked up how to pronounce it and I think it is nonpareil.
That's right. If you are from the left bank, it's nonpareil. Still looks like nonpareil to me,
but that's all right. That's all right. Besides the point. So anyway, I ordered some and I got
some at the same time I got the food coloring and we'll do the food coloring another time.
But she said, if you sprinkle these on your page and then I just am running with what I kind of
grabbed from her great description and I'm just going to play and see what happens. So you want
to see what happens? We're going to spritz and sprinkle. Yeah. Yes, we are. So this is, I don't
know, Amazon, Wilton. Wilton was the brand of this. I imagine these are just, well, let's see what
exactly what they are. They're sugar, cornstarch, dextran, sugar, carnauba wax, confectioners glaze,
sugar, gum arabic, red 40, red number three, yellow number five, blue yellow. So basically
they're like little dots of food, I think, food color and sugar and starch. So let's give this a
go. First we must remove the label. Okay. Now I thought we'd try. Can you see? Let me back you up
here a little bit. I thought we'd try some good old copy paper. Let's see what happens. I have no
idea what's going to happen. We'll just get one sheet first. Maybe we'll do a sandwich. We'll,
we'll sprinkle, spritz, sandwich, and then blow dry and see what happens. Okay. Let me get you.
Oh, I got that. Okay. Sorry, light. Excuse me. Excuse me. All right. Let me get you in the
right zone here. Okay. Here we are. Pretty good. Okay. There we are. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. All
right. So now we have the paper, just regular copy paper, 20 pound weight, Amazon brand. I buy it in
10 reams because I go through paper like crazy, but all right. So this was not very expensive.
It's somewhere between like four and $7, something like that. Okay. So let's just, just try some,
how do you open this? Okay. Oh yeah. Okay. They're just there. Ooh. Okay. This could be messy.
Just saying, maybe I'm gonna sprinkle some in my hand first. Are you coming? Yep. Okay. I don't
think you need very many. I don't know. I don't know. I've never done this before. How do I know
how many you need? I don't know. Let's just try this. All right, here we go. Just going to put
them randomly. We're going to go for the, the kindergarten effect of the random design,
because I don't know what I'm doing, but it might be fun to just give this a try.
Okay. Is that enough? I don't know. Let's try a few more.
I imagine the more you put on, the more color you're going to get, but I don't know how far
this color bleeds. So let's, let's just see. Oh, you have escape artists here. Back on the page,
back on the page. No, we don't want sunny, sunny sleeping. We don't want him eating any of these.
Okay. Now I'm going to attempt, I don't know if this is the way it's officially done. If there
is a fish, I don't know if this is going to all run away either when I'm, I'm spritzing. Okay,
here we go. Don't know what's happening. Don't know what's happening. Maybe it spits it lots.
I don't know. Oh, I see color blooming. Can you see the color blooming? I don't know if you can
see that. I got it really wet. Let's see. Now I'm just going to put one on top. I don't know. I just
feel like I should make a sandwich. Oh, I see little pink things coming through. This could
be cool. This could be cool. It's a little lumpy and crunchy, but it could be cool. All right.
Maybe I should keep going. Just, uh, spritz this one. Yeah, let's do this. Let's, let's layer,
let's make a giant layer cake. Okay. What color is this? Purple. Sure. Why not? Here we go. All
right. Oh, something's happening in there. And maybe these, the, the moistener, I, the moisture,
I think will help these not run around in all of the directions of the sun, which might be a good
thing. Right. Right. Okay. We've got a few escape artists. We're just going to ignore those. Yep.
All right. They didn't get too far. Let's spray a little more. Okay. Here we go. Oh, I can see
the color bleed. Can you see that? I think you can see that. Let me zoom in. Can you see that?
Cool. Huh? There's potential here. There's huge potential. All right. I'm going to wet it where
it didn't get wet enough. Maybe it needs to be wetter, wetter, wetter, Christmas sweater.
All right. Oh, that's kind of cool. Huh? I like that. Okay. This is actually fun. Okay. Now we
just have to hope these things really dissolve because if not, we're going to have crunchy paper.
So we shall see. I'm sure given enough water, a little more water,
just leave these things outside to dry. Okay. What color is this? Yellow. All right.
Oh, no, I better not do that. That would be disaster. All right, here we go. Putting the
yellow down and we're going to take a peek. We're going to like dry some of these and take a peek
and see what on earth is going on. And I am working. I don't know if you can see it, but
there's like a plastic cutting sheet sitting on my craft mat. So I can hopefully collect most of
these guys before they run everywhere. Okay. More water. This, these could go a long way. It's almost
like little concentrated drops of food color. Yeah. How about that? Boy, she came along at the right
time. There were probably a million and one ways to play with this stuff. Okay. We're putting this down.
I guess I could mix colors too. Right. Feeling lumpy. Dissolving. I imagine they're dissolving.
You're dissolving. Right. Right. I hope so. Maybe you have to scrape them off after you're done.
If you don't wet them enough, maybe I'll just really wet the paper there. I mean, eventually
they have to dissolve. Right. At some point. What other color do we have here? Red. Oh, okay. That's
intense. That's going for, well, Christmas is coming eventually. Right. For a crafter, it's
always Christmas because we're always making something. You got to start early in the year.
If you want to have it done by Christmas. All right. Christmas themed stuff is so much fun.
And I think it triggers so many wonderful feelings for people. Good times, home hearth, Christmas
cookies. I mean, who doesn't love Christmas cookies? Right. Right. Okay. All right. Here we
go. Oh, very intense red color. Oh, maybe even the swooshing. This guy, I feel like I'm playing
with alcohol inks almost because I'm directing the flow of the color. Very fun. All right. All right.
See how this goes. Well, I bet you weren't expecting this today. Huh? No, me neither.
So this is kind of fun. All right. Oh, July 4th is coming up. We have some
July 4th-ness going on here. I can feel that. Can you feel that? Getting some nice background
colors here. This just goes to show you that anything can be a craft supply, you know,
until proven otherwise. There is that tag line on there. What's this? Green? Let's go with some
green. Oh, red and green. Great Christmas. Oh, look, I've got all my Christmas work done already
by doing this. Look at that. Yeah. Yeah. Come here, carnauba wax. Yeah. Yeah. Oh. If you move
them. Oh, that's kind of cool. Look at that. Oh, look at that. Oh, you can make like little lines.
Oh, that's fun, too. Oh, that's very fun. Like sometimes you don't know until you get in here
and play. You know what I mean? So you just got to get in there and play. Looks like grass. I'm
the great grass painter of the fields. Look at me go. Very grassy. Very grassy. Who knew? Who knew?
I've got a green finger now. What do I do with that? Baby white. It's time for the baby white.
Do I hope this stuff comes off? I guess it does. It's edible, right? Gosh, I wonder what your
innards look like after eating that. All right. Wetting it down. Maybe I'll lose all the lines.
I don't know. I'm just going to keep going here. This is kind of fun. All right. Yeah, we're down.
Okay. Probably should wear gloves. Oh, well, too late. I should be called a gloveless crafter.
Okay, here we go. All right. Let's see what we got now. Did we come around the mountain? Did
we do orange? I don't think so. All right, orange. Here we go. Yeah, I figured individual colors
for some reason made more sense than getting, like, mixed colors. But you could totally do a
mixed color one, too, because I'm sort of getting mixed color results. But I have some
semblance of control over the color mixage by having them separated ahead of time.
Yeah, that's what I think. Okay, here we go. Let me just wet them up a little bit.
You want to see what those look like if I move them?
Okay. All right. Let's put this one on. Okay. I still do. I feel some lumpies still. There's
still some lumpies there, but that's okay. I mean, I think they'll dissolve in time.
They must. They dissolve in your gut, right? Okay, how about that? All right. So now let me
put this somewhere aside to melt and dry. And as that's melting and drying, we'll try
on a different kind of paper and see what results we get. Okay, I'll be right back. Hold on. Okay,
while those are drying in the kitchen on the counter, I put some parchment paper under them
just so they'll dry. And then I thought I'd try maybe some avocado dyed paper and see what that
looks like. So let's give that a go. All right, let me move this over. Don't worry, there's more
light. Okay. What's that sound? Oh, you just shifted. All right, so let me wet this down.
All right, get it good and wet. I only have one of these, so I'm not going to layer. I'm just
going to apply and see what happens. Okay, just go back at the pink. Oh, this is orange. I guess
we're going with orange because I have it in my hand now. All right. Okay, we'll just do orange
and see where it goes. Maybe we'll put Maltese on this. How about that? Orange, pink. Wow,
maybe they have brown ones. That would look cool, too. I guess you could get the same effect with
coffee crystals for the brown if you wanted to add some of those in there. Oh, maybe we could
try that. Yeah, we could try that. Any other color you want to try? What's that? Yellow? Yeah,
I hear you. Okay, we'll try yellow, a little yellow. And then let me grab my coffee crystals
and we'll add that, too. And we'll see how it goes. Okay, hang on. Okay, here I'm back with
my El Cheapo instant coffee from Aldi. Don't use the good stuff. No, you want to use the cheap
stuff because you're not going to drink it. And you don't need much, I don't think. So have a
nice wet paper. Okay, wet your paper, Marpam. Wetting, wetting, wetting, getting super wetty,
saturated. Sokey dokey. All right, here we go. I don't know what's going to happen. What's going
to happen? I don't know. This is just like playing with one sheet of paper, but it's kind of fun
because it's, this is, I think we've just delved into the world of mixed media, people. We have
gone there. We have. We have gone there. That's kind of cool. Now it looks like a dirty candy
paper. All right, we'll just keep going with that a little bit. All right. And I am just going to
let that one air dry. Let me put more color on. Let me, what the heck? We're playing with it. Let's
really play with it and see what happens. All right, maybe we need some purple. Yeah, there,
that ought to take it up a notch. Here we go. Going around the edges first. Okay, now I'm
developing technique. Yes, I'm around the edges first, so I get my board. Because when you have
a page in a journal, you actually see the three sides because you fold often. So you'll see this
edge more than anything because we tend to decorate in the middle, but often our designs
will get lost in the middle of a signature page because it gets folded. So just kind of keep that
in mind. And this is probably something you'd want to do before you assemble your signatures. Yeah,
I could say that would be right. That's just delicious smattering. Do I need to wet more?
Maybe, huh? Okay. Oh, explosions of color, explosions of color. Okay, so I think what's
happening, let me look, is the little coating of color is coming off. And you can see on like,
see that pink one right there? See how the color came off the outside? And there's this little
white ball. And I think the white ball is the sugar and cornstarch. They don't all look like
that, but there's a white ball. See it right there? Yeah, I don't, I don't, maybe it just
didn't get colored originally, but the blue, or the purple seems to be very intense. Okay,
back it up. All right, so now, oh, without knocking everything over. Okay, now we need to dry this
puppy. So this could take a little bit and I'm going to pull out my, I'm not going to have,
you guys don't have to listen to all the blow drying action going on here. I need a closer
plug. All right, let me go figure. I'm going to just use a regular old hot air gun and I'm
going to blow dry this and we'll see what it looks like when I'm done. Hold on.
