It’s a particularly busy week here at SpaceX!
After two full stackings and a series of cryo-proof tests, Ship 24 is now officially de-stacked from B7, paving for Booster 7's multi-engine static fire tests.
SpaceX’s last year of activity suggests that the company will choose caution during static fire testings.
Elon Musk himself once said that the company needs to be careful, especially as it aims to avoid any mishaps to take place. The company cannot afford any unfortunate events now, especially as it aims to deliver the Starship as early as possible to fulfill its needs for the future missions it plans for the rocket.
So, most likely, the company will continue its conservative approach (i.e. testing one, three, and seven engines over six weeks) instead of jumping straight from seven- to 33-engine testing.
One or several more tests will also be required if SpaceX decides to gradually build up to 33 engines.
If all goes well, SpaceX will then attempt to simultaneously ignite all 33 of the Raptor engines installed on Super Heavy B7, almost certainly making it the most powerful liquid rocket ever tested. Even if all 33 engines never reach more than 60% of their maximum thrust of 230 tons, they will likely break the Soviet N-1 rocket’s record of 4500 tons of thrust at sea level. It would also be the most rocket engines ever simultaneously ignited on one vehicle. SpaceX will be pushing the envelope by several measures, and success is far from guaranteed.
