Woman saved California with Navel Oranges? An amazing historic woman! We visit the Parent Navel Orange Tree in Riverside and learn the story of Eliza Tibbets and her amazing place in history. She started the Citrus industry by bringing a sample Navel Orange tree that originated in monastery in Brazil to her home in Riverside. She watered it with old dish water and the tree thrived! Still growing in Riverside this is one of the two trees she planted. The navel orange tree was uniquely suited to the California's climate and propagated to other regions in the state.

An amazing woman for her time Eliza Tibbets married three times, divorced twice and adopted an African American child. She was also a practicing spiritualist and marched with Frederick Douglass for women's suffrage. Eliza and her husband Luther were a part of a movement to California to form progressive communities. It was in Riverside she wrote to the U.S. Dept of Agriculture to see what might grow at her new home. She and her husband rode 3 days in a buckboard from Riverside to Los Angeles to pick up the sample trees that were sent to them by the Dept. Having come from Washington, D.C. they became know as Washington navels. Once word of the success of the trees spread Eliz and Luther made a good income selling cuttings from the parent trees. *

Like visiting the source of the Nile or seeing the first Apple computer this this amazing woman started the industry that saved the California economy for decades. We owe Eliza Tibbets an extreme debt

The tree is located at the intersection of Arlington and Magnolia Aves. in Riverside at 7101 Magnolia Ave.
