Scrambling The Spiky Rock Section of Bryant's Gully
This is going to be interesting.
Oh, that's a good handhold there.
That's right.
Just Spider-Man from left to right.
Always making sure your hands are in somewhere good.
Look at his web.
There's more on there, Jesus.
Sorry, fellas.
One of you's got to make the sacrifice.
Mountain spiders are so much tougher.
Oh, no, look.
Sorry.
Right, I love this little ravine.
Remember the first time I found it, I was like,
how the hell do I get out?
It's up here.
Yeah, usually much further to the right, actually.
Further to the right.
Fuck.
Oh, yes, right.
Once you've climbed out of this gully,
very dramatic backdrop there,
you're now in the third section of Bryant's Gully,
which is the rocky section.
It's just the water runs out,
the vegetation stops, and it's just rock.
Some of you viewers might remember this section,
but a year ago,
when I dropped a rock off it,
it caused a bit of controversy, that video.
Quite rightly so in some ways,
but I stand by my opinion
that the rock was not going anywhere.
It's really, it's not bouncing all the way down
and killing someone.
But you should never drop rocks off the side of a cliff.
Regardless, it's just good practice not to.
So don't do it, kids.
But to the people who said,
oh, it could have just bounced off,
gone straight down the gully over there,
no, it couldn't.
And anyone who climbs this bit of the cliff
will know that that's not the case.
But anyway, let's not get into all that again.
Classic bit of heather.
Hiding a...
Now that is not very fun to hold on to,
because any of these could snap off.
These are really shattered.
Really spread my weight between my limbs here.
Oh yeah, see, that.
Right, that one is alright.
And slowly, slowly, slowly.
That's good.
Slowly, slowly.
Phew, come on.
Getting somewhere now, look at that.
Right, I wouldn't choose to come up this way again.
This section.
I was just kind of going up any old route that I saw.
And this is a good example of how you can
just climb yourself
into
a complete
no-go.
OK, nearly out, nearly out.
Are we nearly out?
That's the thing about Bryant's Gully,
you're never really sure.
Yeah.
I think we're getting somewhere.
Oh yeah.
Come on, slowly but surely.
Oh, **** me.
That was exciting.
Wow, look at that.
This is the thing.
I really enjoy the buzz
from being in situations
where I think no one can help me.
I have got to solve this problem by myself right now.
But then
try not to cross that line where
something fucks up
and then I'm in a world of pain.
But one thing
doing this stuff teaches me
is that I don't panic.
Oh, yeah, my little grass patch.
Might have a rest here.
Look at that for a view.
No easy way down from here.
Can only go up.
What a beast.
I remember the first time I was sat here looking up at that
thinking,
oh shit, I have no idea
what the route is.
Just got to work it out as you go along.
First, food and water.
Sun protection.
Oh, beautiful view.
