Hey it's Dustin with Boomer Outdoors and I'm out in my backyard November 22nd
and I'm setting up our two-person backpacking tent.
You ask why? Well I want to put a final test
on our Naturehike CW400 Goose Downfield sleeping bags.
We've taken them out when it's 50 degrees at night. We've taken them when
it's in the 40s. We've even taken them down to the mid
30s when we were in Glacier National Park.
But tonight it's supposed to get down in the mid 20s.
And my wife says I'm crazy. But I want to see how low these sleeping bags will
actually go. And then I'm going to do a final review
on this sleeping bag. So hopefully tonight I won't freeze to
death. At least if I get really really cold
I can get up and go in the house. So here's my setup tonight.
I'm using the Sundome two-person tent by Coleman.
This is a very inexpensive tent and I'm using it primarily for this purpose.
This is tonight to test the sleeping bag. Inside the tent
I have a Big Agnes AXL sleeping pad. It's 78 inches long
and 25 inches wide. It's about three and a half inches
thick. It has an R value of three. So I've added to that a Therm-a-Rest pad
to give it another R value. Hopefully to get it down
to below freezing. The bag is a Naturehike CW400.
It is a 750 fill power goose down bag. It's 90 percent goose down
which means it has only 10 feathers. It has 14 ounces of fill
in the bag and the total bag weight on this bag is two pounds.
The dimensions are 87 inches long by 33 and a half inches wide.
It does have a square toe box. It is kind of a
semi-mummy bag. It does have a nice hood on it.
I've added to this a synthetic sleeping bag liner that
weighs about 11 ounces. The fabric on this bag is a 20 denier
nylon. It's very lightweight material. Not the
lightest but overall it's a good bag. The rating on this bag is a comfort
rating of 41, a transition of 32, and a lower limit of 15 degrees.
We're going to see if I can push this thing down to the mid-20s tonight.
Okay so here I am. I'm in my Naturehike CW400 sleeping bag.
Right now it's 30 degrees outside and I've been in the tent for about 10
minutes. I got snuggled in here. I think right now it's about five and a
half to six degrees warmer in here than it is outside.
So we'll see actually how cold it gets in the tent.
I do have a thermometer here to keep track of that of what actual temperature
in the tent and it may not get nearly as cold as I
think it does. So I'll keep a record of that. Probably
two or three o'clock in the morning. Four o'clock in the morning will be the
coldest temperature and we'll see what it is then and I'll
let you know on my review how it does. See you in the morning. Well
good morning. It is 7 a.m outside right now and it is a balmy 29 degrees out
there. The low last night well this morning
about five this morning was 27 degrees and in the tent the low got down to 32.2
degrees. That's as cold as I could get it in
here even with opening the little windows vent windows at the top here.
I could not get it any lower than that.
Did not get down as low as I thought it was going to get. I thought it would get
down to about 25 but 27 was the low. The humidity was really high about 75
because we had rain the day before so the humidity got really really high
but I will say the test was a success. I did not get cold.
I had to pull the sleeping bag all the way up to the cover of my head
my mouth almost just left a little place for my
to breathe through but I stayed nice and toasty in here.
The sleeping bag liner I think made a big difference.
If it wasn't for the liner I might have gotten chilly.
Okay so here we are. I survived the 27 degree temperatures of the night in my
Naturehike CW400 bag and I just want to give you a little
quick review of this bag. This bag is a CW400 Naturehike sleeping
bag. They also make a CWZ400 which is
a slightly different bag than this which you'll often see them sold together
on Amazon, you'll see them on the Naturehike website or AliExpress.
The difference is the CW400 has a 750 fill power down
the CWZ has a 550 so this is the 750 fill power down which is what I
wanted. This bag comes in four colors. It comes
in the beautiful yellow I have here that you can see from outer space. It
comes in a green, a gray, and a black and I'll show you the
black in a minute. This bag comes in two different sizes.
This is the large which is 86.6 inches long.
It's 33.5 inches wide which I wanted a big bag.
The middle size or medium bag is 82.7 inches long
and 29.5 inches wide so the larger is basically four inches
longer four inches wider. This bag, I chose this bag because of the
temperature rating on it. I will show you it does have the
European norm rating right inside the bag here.
Right here we have a comfort rating of 41, a transition rating of 32,
and a risk rating of 12.2 degrees Fahrenheit.
This bag does come with YKK zippers. One here on the side also one
at the bottom that you can use to vent the foot if you like.
The bag doesn't have a lot of frills on it.
It doesn't have an inner chest pocket. It does not have a
baffle down the side. A lot of bags have those. This bag does not.
I did stay warm in this bag down to 32 degrees
ambient temperature with a sleeping bag liner.
The bag doesn't have a lot of frills on it but it does have a really good
quality down. The fabric on it is a 20D nylon or 20
denier nylon. Very soft, very very comfortable bag.
I chose this bag for a couple of reasons. I wanted this fill power.
I wanted a bag that's roomy. I toss and turn like crazy
so I wanted a bag that was wider. This bag has plenty of room to toss and turn.
Plenty of room to move around. I did take my puppy jacket and put it inside
the bag to keep it warm. I also put it down where the zipper is
just in case any cold air would come in there.
Now I've slept with this bag down to 41 degrees,
50 degrees, mid 30s, and now down to 32 degrees and I've been warming this bag
all three times. Now this bag weighs two pounds and I did
weigh both of these. They are two pounds and you can see also how small it
condenses down to. My wife and I were using synthetic bags
and they were twice this size and twice this weight to get in, you know,
to get a 20 degree temperature range. This one is the black. As you can see
it's much prettier. You'll see that when I get it out of
here. Then the yellow and this is my wife's.
When I bought these bags on Amazon they only had two colors available.
So she got the beautiful black and blue or turquoise.
It really looks turquoise in the light. It looks blue on the camera.
They also come with a storage sack that you can use to put your bag in to keep
it fluffed up in the closet. They come with a stuff sack and if you
want to you can do like I do and just hang them up by the foot loops.
So why did I pick this bag? Well because I am a tight lot.
This bag right now on Amazon is about $159.
On AliExpress you can get it for $143. It lists for $186
on the Naturehike website. If you compare that to other bags,
let me give you a bag that's really close to this. The Sea to Summit Ascent
1 down bag, 25 degree, the long version which
is basically the same specs as this. It's two pounds. It has 13.1 ounces
of their 750 plus ultra dry down. It has a 20D material.
It has a comfort rating of 35, a lower limit of 25.
That bag is $369. They also make their Trep down
30 long which has a 650 ultra dry down. It weighs 1 pound 14 ounces. It has a 14
ounce fill which is exactly the same weight as this
even though it's not quite the same down. It's a little bit less down.
It has a 650 versus a 750. It has a 30D nylon shell.
It has a low comfort limit of 41, a lower 30.
$289. If you compare that with Therm-a-Rest Q-Star 32,
the Marmot Yala Bali 30, you'll see the same
or even the Big Agnes Sidewinder 35. You'll see basically those same exact
specifications but the bags are twice as much.
I think if you're looking for a budget down bag this is a good bag to go with.
