Hey guys, have you ever been in the middle of making a recipe only to realize that you
don't have enough powdered sugar on hand or any at all and the last thing you want to
do is run all the way back to the store to pick some up?
Well today I'm going to be showing you how you can make powdered sugar right in your
own kitchen.
My name is Tessa and I'm from HandleTheHeat.com where I love to share homemade baking recipes
and kitchen tips to help you along and today I'm going to be sharing this super simple
method for making DIY powdered sugar.
So you'll want to watch this video all the way to the end because you need to know my
powdered sugar tips before you make your own.
So let's go ahead and get started.
So powdered sugar can also be called confectioner's sugar or icing sugar and it's basically just
ground up granulated sugar and we can grind it right at home with a blender or a food
processor.
It's super simple and actually it's cheaper than buying powdered sugar at the store.
Now you'll want to reserve this method just for those times when you really need powdered
sugar in a pinch because making powdered sugar at home can actually dull the blades of your
food processor or blender and can scratch the plastic container so you'll only want
to use this method when you really need to.
So let me show you how.
Alright so I have my blender here, you can also use a food processor, whichever you use
you just want to make sure that it has some power to it.
Nothing that's really weak or cheap or junky, you want to make sure that it has a pretty
powerful motor in order to be able to grind the granulated sugar.
So what you'll need to do is just pour in the granulated sugar into the bowl of your
blender or food processor and you want to use about half as much granulated sugar as
you need powdered sugar.
Okay so I'm just going to place the lid on and pulse and the trick is you want to make
sure that the entire powdered sugar has settled completely before you ever open the lid otherwise
you'll end up with a big powdered sugar mess everywhere.
And we have powdered sugar, it's completely light, fluffy and powdery and that's exactly
what you're looking for.
So before we can use this we want to make sure that we sift it to remove any clumps
or pieces of granulated sugar that weren't properly powdered and if you want to make
it even that much more like the store bought version you can actually add in a teaspoon
of cornstarch or arrowroot powder which will help prevent the powdered sugar from clumping
or caking.
It's especially good to use if you're storing the powdered sugar for an extended period
of time.
So I've got my homemade powdered sugar, it's perfect for recipes like buttercreams or icings
when you need that really fine texture.
It's super easy to make at home and I really hope you enjoyed watching this video.
