How to know if you have a real American Pit Bull Terrier?
I often see many different bull breed owners claim their dog as an American Pit Bull Terrier.
The most common mislabeled breeds are American Staffordshire Terriers,
Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and American Bullies.
Now I know they mean no harm but it's important not to mix up these breeds based on a type of
look these dogs have. This causes false statistics and dog bite incidents and has brought a lot of
negative attention on the breed so it's important to know what you're owning as your companion.
First you should assess the dog's overall height, weight, and build.
An adult American Pit Bull Terrier weighs between 30 and 60 pounds
with male dogs normally a little heavier than females.
The height of an American Pit Bull Terrier is typically between 18 and 22 inches
measured from the top of the dog's withers to the ground.
If your dog exceeds any of these measurements it's likely to be mixed with another breed.
Second what you could do is look at the dog's coat and color.
American Pit Bull Terriers have a short glossy coat that shines in sunlight
and feels slightly stiff when stroked. The most common colors are red, black,
buckskin, and fawn. The United Kennel Club does not consider long,
curly, or wavy coats true to be American Pit Bull Terrier breed standard.
The traditional American Pit Bull Terrier may have any color coat
although the UKC disqualifies merely colored American Pit Bull Terriers.
Dogs may commonly have multicolored or patterned coats.
Third thing you could do is examine the dog's head, face, and ears.
An American Pit Bull Terrier has a thick muscular neck and a broad face across the cheek area.
The dog's eyes are widely spaced and under UKC breed regulations may be any color except blue.
The American Pit Bull Terrier nose is large with wide nostrils.
The dog's ears are small or medium sized sitting high on the head.
The American Pit Bull Terrier's ears may be cropped, short, or left natural.
The American Pit Bull Terrier is a medium sized, solidly built,
short coated dog with smooth, well defined muscular physique.
This breed is both powerful and athletic. Naturally this breed is dog aggressive
and aggressive to most animals but they are not human aggressive.
Now this is all based on the looks of the American Pit Bull Terrier.
How do we really determine what breed you have without all the guessing?
The best thing to do is get a DNA test for your dog.
I will link the most accurate and credible DNA test on the market.
It is common for most owners to have a mixed breed because
the real American Pit Bull Terrier is hard to come across with a pure bloodline.
Now leave a comment what kind of dog do you think you own?
Do you think you have American Pit Bull Terrier mixed with another kind of breed?
