The High Tatras are the smallest, but one of the most beautiful alpine mountain ranges in the world. They are part of the Carpathian mountain range and rise up out of the ground on the border between Slovakia and Poland, and are home to mammals such as the Eurasian brown bear (Ursus arctos arctos) and the Tatra chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra tatrica). The Eastern side (Vysoké Tatry) is characterised by unique and impressive sharp rocky peaks up to 2,655 m (Gerlachovský štít), many waterfalls and dozens of crystal clear mountain lakes. The wonderful Western side (Západné Tatry) is slightly lower (Bystrá: 2,248 m) but equally beautiful in its own way. Many hiking trails wind their way through the valleys and over the numerous mountain slopes and peaks with breathtaking views.
